There’s a charmingly nostalgic PBS special called Things That Aren’t Here Anymore that takes viewers back to a time when everything in Los Angeles seemed to cost just a nickel. As the city has grown increasingly expensive over the years, I’ve found myself falling into the same wave of nostalgia: Remembering when dollar tacos actually cost a dollar? Or when parking at the Griffith Observatory was completely free?

But then I pause and think about the abundance of free museums scattered throughout the city and the miles of public coastline that stretch along the Pacific. I realize that there are still countless incredible free things to do in Los Angeles—perhaps even more so than in any other nearby city I can think of. While Los Angeles is undeniably a celebrity-driven town where dining at top restaurants, sipping cocktails, and indulging in spa treatments are common, people here still eagerly seek out free experiences (or those with very low prices, like some of L.A.’s best cheap eats). Below is a list of the best free things to do and places to visit across Los Angeles, perfect for both tourists and locals.

Explore Free Museums

Los Angeles is home to a variety of world-class museums that don’t charge admission. The Getty Center offers stunning art collections and breathtaking views of the city, all without a price tag. The LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) also provides free entry on certain days, and its vast collection spans centuries of global art. For a more unique experience, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County features exhibits on dinosaurs, space, and local ecosystems—all for free.

Walk Along the Public Coastline

One of the greatest perks of living in Los Angeles is access to its beautiful public beaches. From Santa Monica Beach to Venice Beach, residents and visitors can enjoy the sun, sand, and surf without spending a dime. These stretches of coastline are not only great for relaxation but also for activities like jogging, biking, or simply taking in the ocean views.

Attend Free Events

In addition to the ever-growing list of free attractions, Los Angeles is known for its constant stream of free events. From outdoor movie screenings in parks to community festivals and cultural celebrations, there’s always something happening. Many of these events take place in neighborhoods like Silver Lake, Echo Park, and Arts District, offering a taste of local culture and creativity.

Discover Public Art and Landmarks

Los Angeles is filled with public art installations and iconic landmarks that are free to explore. The Griffith Observatory offers panoramic views of the city and is a must-visit for anyone interested in astronomy. The Hollywood Sign is another famous landmark that can be viewed from various vantage points around the city. Additionally, murals and sculptures by local artists can be found throughout neighborhoods, adding to the city’s vibrant artistic landscape.

Enjoy Free Cultural Experiences

From free concerts in the park to open-air film screenings, Los Angeles provides numerous opportunities for cultural engagement without a cost. The Zoo Los Angeles is another great spot, offering a chance to see a wide variety of animals in a natural setting. For those interested in history, the California Science Center and The Broad museum provide educational and engaging experiences that are accessible to everyone.

Take Advantage of Free Attractions

While many of Los Angeles’ most popular attractions come with a price tag, there are still plenty of free options available. The Beverly Grove neighborhood, for example, is known for its art galleries and boutique shops, many of which offer free exhibitions. The High Line in New York City may be the most famous elevated park, but Los Angeles has its own version in the form of the Elysian Park and Hollywood Forever Cemetery, both of which are free to visit.

By exploring these free attractions, residents and visitors alike can experience the unique charm of Los Angeles without breaking the bank. Whether it’s strolling through a museum, soaking up the sun on a beach, or attending a local event, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy the city’s offerings. So next time you’re looking for something to do, remember that the best experiences in Los Angeles don’t always come with a price.
