RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – The Rapid City Regional Airport is experiencing a surge in air travel, with more people than ever before choosing to fly in and out of the facility. This year has been particularly remarkable for the airport, as it has already broken its previous record for enplanements, surpassing the 196,000 mark that was set in 2025.

“For the sixth consecutive year we have surpassed previous passenger enplanement records,” said Megan Johnson, the Air Service Development Manager. “We have seen over 206 thousand enplanements through June. The Black Hills have so much to offer; we are what’s considered a hyper-seasonal market.”

Despite the record numbers, the airport has faced some challenges due to the recent record-breaking heat. According to Johnson, the high temperatures have made flying a bit more difficult for pilots, but so far, there have been no significant impacts on flight schedules.

“Hot weather makes air less dense,” explained Johnson. “When you have a shorter runway, it can affect the lift of an aircraft. We haven’t seen any heat-related delays as of now.”

As the number of passengers continues to grow, the airport is taking steps to expand its facilities to better accommodate the increasing demand. One of the key projects currently underway is the expansion of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) area, along with the addition of more gates to help manage the flow of travelers.

“These passenger numbers really demonstrate why this expansion is needed,” said Johnson. “Behind the scenes, we are adding additional TSA lanes, we are improving the flow of passenger baggage to the aircraft, and then further along in the project, we will be adding more gates.”

The expansion efforts are part of a broader strategy to ensure that the airport can continue to serve its growing community effectively. By investing in infrastructure improvements, the airport aims to enhance the overall experience for travelers while maintaining high standards of safety and efficiency.

Some of the key components of the expansion include:

  • Enhancing the TSA checkpoint to reduce wait times and improve security processes
  • Upgrading baggage handling systems to streamline the movement of luggage
  • Adding new gates to provide more space for passengers and reduce congestion

These changes are expected to have a positive impact on both the airport’s operations and the traveler experience. As the Black Hills region continues to attract visitors and residents alike, the airport’s ability to adapt and grow will be crucial in meeting the needs of the community.

In addition to these physical expansions, the airport is also focusing on improving customer service and communication with travelers. This includes updates on flight information, assistance with navigating the terminal, and support for those with special needs or requirements.

Overall, the success of the Rapid City Regional Airport this year highlights the importance of proactive planning and investment in infrastructure. With continued growth and development, the airport is well-positioned to meet the demands of the future while maintaining its commitment to safety, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
