Tracking the Movements of a Giant White Shark

A massive male white shark, known as “Contender,” has recently been detected near a popular East Coast tourist spot. This 14-foot-long shark, weighing nearly 1,700 pounds, is the largest of its kind ever tagged in the western North Atlantic. The GPS tracking device on Contender sent an alert on Thursday evening, indicating his presence near North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

The tracking system works by pinging a satellite whenever the shark is out of the water. However, this time, the shark was not exposed long enough to pinpoint its exact location. A spokesperson for OCEARCH, a non-profit organization dedicated to tracking sharks, mentioned that the nearly 1,700-pound shark is likely heading up the East Coast as part of its annual summer migration.

White sharks in the western North Atlantic typically migrate north during the summer and early fall, foraging in the waters of Cape Cod or Atlantic Canada. These regions offer ideal conditions for the sharks, with comfortable water temperatures and an abundance of prey such as grey seals and large fish species.

Experts explain that white sharks, which are the same as great white sharks, often feed on schools of menhaden near the shores of New York’s Long Island. The last known location of Contender was around the same area in April, when the tag stayed out of the water long enough for researchers to locate him accurately.

While Contender is a large white shark, he is not the biggest. Deep Blue, the largest known white shark, has been seen swimming off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii. Deep Blue is approximately 20 feet long and is estimated to weigh around 4,500 pounds.

These sharks have inspired many stories, including the book that led to filmmaker Steven Spielberg’s 1975 summer blockbuster film Jaws. White sharks are known to swim thousands of miles across the globe.

Journey of a Migratory Giant

Contender was first tagged in January of last year off the coasts of Florida and Georgia. Since then, he has traveled over 7,000 miles in the Atlantic Ocean, moving between Florida and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, off the coast of Canada.

The tracking device on Contender is expected to provide real-time data about his movements for five years. Chris Fischer, the founder of OCEARCH, stated in a release last year that each ping from Contender offers valuable insights into the life of a mature male white shark — how he moves, feeds, and contributes to the population’s recovery.

Contender was named in honor of the boat company Contender Boats, which partners with OCEARCH. This collaboration highlights the importance of public and private efforts in marine conservation and research.
