If you’re looking for an adventurous hiking experience in Texas, you’re in for a treat. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, located in the Hill Country, is set to expand its offerings with the opening of the Backcountry area on Tuesday, July 7. This marks the first phase of self-guided access to one of the newest additions under the Centennial Parks program.

“This first wave of development will be ideal for true adventurers who are seeking a more rugged experience than what they’ve previously encountered at Enchanted Rock,” said Superintendent Doug Cochran. “Future phases will include closer parking options, allowing visitors of all experience levels to enjoy the beauty of the Backcountry.”

For now, reaching the Backcountry will require some effort. There is no dedicated parking area for this new section. To access it, visitors must enter through park headquarters and hike approximately two miles across the existing trails of Enchanted Rock before reaching the gate that leads into the Backcountry.

The Backcountry Area has its own operating hours, open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., which differs from the main park’s schedule. If you plan to explore this region, it’s important to be well-prepared. Like much of Enchanted Rock, the Backcountry offers limited shade, and its trails are considered rugged. Visitors should bring plenty of water and salty snacks, wear sun protection such as sunscreen and long-sleeved shirts, hike with a partner, share their plans in advance, and carry a cellphone.

There are two water refill stations within the Backcountry Area: one at the entrance and another at the center of the property, at the intersection of Ringtail Loop and Songbird Trail. A portable restroom is also available at the central station.

New trail maps for the expansion are available both at park headquarters and online through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s website. These maps provide essential information for navigating the expanded area.

Visitors interested in learning more about Enchanted Rock State Natural Area can find additional details on the park’s official page.
