A New Way to Celebrate the Fourth of July in Addison

Lawn chairs in hand, hundreds of North Texans made their way to Addison for the city’s big Fourth of July celebration, Kaboom Town, using DART’s new silver line. This innovative transportation option provided a much-needed alternative to the usual traffic congestion that typically plagues the area during the event.

“I didn’t want to drive,” said Sara Berry, who rode the train for the first time. “I didn’t want to deal with all the traffic and the congestion, and I had never ridden this line before, and I wanted to check it out.”

The CBS News Texas team took advantage of the new line to speak with riders who were using it for the first time. Their journey started in Carrollton and ended in Addison, where the excitement of the Fourth of July was palpable.

“I’m excited about going on the train,” said a young girl who was eager about the train, waiting with her family. “It’s fun and different from driving.”

Timothy Sanchez shared his thoughts on the event. “I seen it on the news, that there’s going to be so many people,” he said. “I think they said like 500,000 or something like that, and so I figured we could take the DART and try to save some time getting out of Addison.”

Almost every single person CBS News Texas spoke to on the Silver Line was headed to Kaboom Town. Philip Holden expressed his gratitude to Doug Dunbar, who reminded him about the silver line’s route to Addison Circle.

“The four-decade tradition usually causes a traffic mess in the area,” said one rider. “There was so much gridlock after the show, and now we just get done, get on the train and it takes us within a couple minutes from home.”

With trains running every 30 minutes throughout the night, organizers hope this new alternative helps alleviate some of the chaos for the annual event. Mary Rosenbleeth, the marketing & tourism director with the City of Addison, shared her excitement about the new line.

“We’ve just been waiting on the transit for years, so we’re super excited to have it, it’s really a great benefit with our events,” she said.

For first-time riders, overall, the new line earned positive reviews. One rider mentioned the difficulty in accessing schedules online. “Online it’s real hard to see schedules and stuff, like to see the times and when the trains are running, so maybe if there’s just better information on that,” she said.

Another rider praised the experience. “To die for, easy, simple, simple, simple,” she said.

Benefits of the Silver Line

The introduction of the Silver Line has brought several benefits to the community, especially during major events like Kaboom Town. The ability to avoid traffic congestion is a significant advantage for residents and visitors alike. With the convenience of public transportation, more people are choosing to use the DART system, which not only reduces traffic but also promotes a greener way of traveling.

Additionally, the Silver Line provides an accessible and efficient means of transportation for those who may not have access to a car. This inclusivity ensures that more people can participate in local events and enjoy the community’s offerings.

The success of the Silver Line has also sparked conversations about the potential for expanding other transit options in the region. As more people embrace public transportation, the demand for improved services and infrastructure is likely to grow, leading to further developments in the future.

Future Prospects for Public Transportation

Looking ahead, the success of the Silver Line could serve as a model for other cities looking to enhance their public transportation systems. By investing in reliable and efficient transit options, communities can reduce traffic congestion, lower carbon emissions, and improve the quality of life for residents.

Moreover, the positive feedback from first-time riders highlights the importance of clear communication and accessibility in public transportation. Ensuring that schedules and service information are easily available can encourage more people to use these services, ultimately leading to a more connected and sustainable community.

As the popularity of the Silver Line continues to grow, it will be interesting to see how it evolves and adapts to meet the needs of its users. With ongoing improvements and community engagement, the future of public transportation in North Texas looks promising.
