New Mexico State Police Investigate Drownings at Ute Lake

New Mexico State Police have confirmed two incidents involving drowning at Ute Lake in Quay County, with one person recovered and another still missing. The events have raised concerns among local authorities and residents about safety at the popular recreational area.

The first incident occurred on Sunday night when a man fell from a boat at the lake. State police were called to the scene following reports of a possible drowning. The individual was eventually recovered on Monday morning, though no details about the condition or identity of the person have been released. Authorities have not provided further information regarding the circumstances of the fall or the recovery process.

Second Incident Still Under Investigation

In addition to the first incident, NMSP officials have confirmed a second potential drowning that took place on Saturday. According to the report, officers were called to Ute Lake around 5:30 p.m. on July 4 after receiving reports of a male swimmer who had not resurfaced. Despite ongoing efforts, the second individual has not yet been located.

No additional information has been made public, and authorities have not commented on the status of the search for the missing person. Local law enforcement is likely working closely with other agencies to ensure a thorough investigation and to provide updates as more information becomes available.

Community Concerns and Safety Measures

The incidents have sparked concern within the community, especially given the popularity of Ute Lake as a destination for outdoor activities. Residents and visitors alike are being urged to exercise caution when engaging in water-related activities, particularly during peak times of use.

Local officials have emphasized the importance of following safety guidelines, such as:

  • Always wearing a life jacket when on or near the water
  • Avoiding alcohol consumption before or during water activities
  • Being aware of weather conditions and water currents
  • Never swimming alone, especially in areas with strong currents or deep waters

These measures are critical for preventing similar incidents in the future and ensuring the safety of all individuals who visit the lake.

Ongoing Updates and Resources

As the investigation continues, it is expected that more information will be released by local authorities. For those interested in staying informed, updates may be available through official channels, including social media platforms and local news outlets.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to check for any new advisories or safety recommendations issued by the New Mexico State Police or other relevant agencies. Additionally, those who have information related to the missing individual are urged to contact local law enforcement immediately.

The tragic events at Ute Lake serve as a reminder of the importance of water safety and the need for vigilance when enjoying outdoor recreational activities. As the search for the missing person continues, the community remains hopeful for a positive outcome.
