Tragic Train Collision in Central England Leaves Multiple Injured
A devastating train collision occurred in central England, resulting in multiple injuries and one fatality. The incident took place late Friday afternoon when two passenger trains collided near the town of Bedford. According to rail tracking websites, both trains were heading south toward London St Pancras station.
One passenger described the moment of impact, stating that he was thrown forward and witnessed fellow travelers with broken bones and bloody injuries. The collision caused significant chaos, with emergency services rushing to the scene.
British Transport Police Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsi reported that over 80 people were treated in hospitals following the crash, with 28 still hospitalized a day later. The East of England Ambulance Service confirmed one death at the scene, along with 11 individuals suffering from very serious injuries, 22 with serious injuries, and 56 with minor injuries.
The incident has prompted a major response from emergency services, including an air ambulance and hazardous incident teams. A major incident has been declared, with police, Bedfordshire Police, and local Fire and Rescue and Ambulance Services working together at the scene.
Peter Knapp, a passenger on the rear train, described the sudden impact without any warning. He said, “There was a moment of being flung into the chair in front, and then I saw smoke.” Knapp added that people were crying and screaming, showing their fear and confusion. He managed to escape through a gap in the doors, noting that many passengers had broken legs and were unable to speak.
Photos and videos shared on social media showed dozens of people, some with bandages, standing or sitting among emergency vehicles parked on a road parallel to the train tracks. Despite the chaos, many appeared uninjured.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his concern over the incident, stating, “It is hugely concerning,” and adding that his thoughts were with the family of the deceased and those injured. He also thanked the emergency services for their swift response.
The RMT union, representing railway workers, is monitoring the situation and expressing concern over reports of serious injuries to both staff and passengers. East Midlands Railway confirmed that the 4.40pm train from Corby to St Pancras collided with the 3.50pm train from Nottingham to the same station. The company has canceled all trains to and from St Pancras for the rest of Friday and is yet to confirm the schedule for Saturday.
Buckingham Palace released a statement expressing King Charles’s deep sadness over the crash, stating, “His thoughts and sympathies are with the family of the deceased and with all those injured or affected by such a tragic incident.”
