Bryce Harper Denies Knowledge of FanDuel Video Use

Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper has publicly stated that he was unaware of the true purpose behind a personalized video he filmed for FanDuel. The statement, shared on his Instagram account on Monday, July 13, reveals that Harper would not have participated in the video if he had known it would be used as part of a VIP promotion.

Harper expressed his disappointment and frustration with the situation, emphasizing that he did not consent to the use of the video for commercial purposes. “I did not know FanDuel would do this,” he wrote. “I did not consent to it, and FanDuel had no right to do it.”

The video in question was first reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer. It features Harper wishing a fan a happy Thanksgiving in November 2024, with the sports betting company’s logo prominently displayed. Harper claims he was given a script to read and did so “in good faith.” He now says he was misled about the intended use of the content.

The Fan’s Allegations

The fan involved in the controversy is Terry Thompson, who is currently suing FanDuel and his VIP host, Bryttanni Morgan. According to the lawsuit, Thompson claims that the companies caused him to develop a gambling addiction, resulting in a loss of $2 million in bets. Other entities named in the lawsuit include DraftKings, the NFL, and Genius Sports, the league’s official data distributor.

Thompson alleges that Morgan contacted him about promotional offers and gifts, including tickets and hotel accommodations to attend the Super Bowl. These incentives are said to have encouraged him to bet more frequently.

Harper’s Statement

In his statement, Harper clarified that he has no affiliation with FanDuel. “What happened here went beyond anything I knew about or approved,” he said. “I have no affiliation with FanDuel whatsoever.”

Harper also addressed the role of Cameo, the platform through which the video was created. He explained that the request for a “holiday video for Terry” came from someone identifying themselves only as ‘Bryttanni.’ At the time, Harper was unaware that the video would be used for commercial purposes. The request included a short script, which he read in good faith.

“I did not know FanDuel would do this,” he added. “Had I known FanDuel’s true intent, I would not have made the video. The same is true had I known anything about Terry or his situation, or about any alleged ‘partnership’ between Cameo and FanDuel.”

Legal Implications

According to reports from The Athletic, Harper could pursue litigation against FanDuel. Two individuals briefed on the matter suggest that legal action is a possibility.

The video is currently under review by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, as reported by ESPN. This development adds another layer of complexity to the situation, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability in the use of celebrity endorsements in the gambling industry.

Final Remarks

Harper’s full statement emphasizes his lack of knowledge and consent regarding the use of the video. “Contrary to the Inquirer’s suggestion, I did not know the Cameo video would be used for a FanDuel VIP promotion,” he stated. “Counsel has directed me not to comment any further at this time.”

This incident raises important questions about the responsibilities of celebrities and the platforms they engage with, especially when it comes to promoting products that can have serious consequences for consumers. As the situation unfolds, all parties involved will likely face scrutiny and potential legal challenges.
