Waunakee Fire Department: No Injuries After Sunday Gas Leak

WAUNAKEE, Wis. (WMTV) – The Waunakee Fire Department reported that no injuries occurred after 18 homes were evacuated due to a gas leak on Sunday night in the 600 block of Sixth Street.
The fire department received a call just after 9:15 p.m. and confirmed an active natural gas leak. Following this, Madison Gas and Electric (MG&E) was contacted for an immediate response.
Firefighters and the Waunakee Police Department set up a safety perimeter and began evacuating residents living on the 600 block of Sixth Street and parts of Holiday Drive between Fifth and Seventh Streets.
According to the fire department, the evacuation was completed by 9:40 p.m., with personnel arriving on the scene at 9:41 p.m. to confirm the established isolation zone.
MG&E managed to secure the gas supply just before 10:45 p.m. Waunakee firefighters then conducted secondary gas monitoring of homes and nearby storm sewers to ensure there was no remaining natural gas in the area.
Residents who lived in the evacuated areas were permitted to return home before 11 p.m. The scene was handed over to MG&E for repairs to the damaged gas line, and the Waunakee Fire Department cleared the leak at 11:10 p.m.
The Waunakee Police Department, Waunakee Area EMS, and MG&E provided assistance to the Waunakee Fire Department during the incident.
