Giannis Antetokounmpo made his first public remarks since being traded to the Miami Heat during his appearance at SNF Nostos 2026, an international festival in Athens that celebrates culture, sports, and social good. The event was hosted by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, and Antetokounmpo joined Olympic medalist Emmanouil Karalis and Stavros Niarchos Foundation Co-President Andreas Dracopoulos for a discussion on the values behind athletic excellence and how these principles can inspire athletes to give back to their communities.

Antetokounmpo did not address questions about his recent trade to the Heat, instead focusing on his philanthropy and the impact he hopes to make beyond basketball.

“I came from nothing. Growing up, my family relied on community organizations for food and basic necessities. I remember asking why these people helped us, and they said it was from the heart,” Antetokounmpo reflected. “As a kid, I didn’t grasp the meaning, but now I understand the power of compassion and generosity. We may not be able to solve every problem, but we can always do something to ease someone’s load.”

During the event, Antetokounmpo shared how a conversation with former U.S. President Barack Obama had a significant impact on him. Obama encouraged him to use his platform not only for personal success but also to advocate for causes he believes in and inspire others to dream big. This guidance pushed Antetokounmpo to step outside his comfort zone and raise awareness for issues that shaped his childhood.

“Although I prefer to keep my personal life private, that conversation made me realize the importance of speaking out and sharing my journey and platform,” Antetokounmpo said. “I’m extremely proud of the foundation and the real difference it’s making in people’s lives.”

These early experiences have deeply influenced Antetokounmpo’s commitment to making a difference beyond the basketball court. In 2022, he and his family established the Charles Antetokounmpo Family Foundation in honor of his late father. The foundation focuses on three places he considers home: Milwaukee, Greece, and Nigeria. It provides food security, access to education, youth sports programs, and emergency relief to those in need.

Antetokounmpo’s recent appearance at the festival followed his trade from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Miami Heat. The blockbuster deal involved Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis moving to the Heat, while the Bucks received Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks (including the No. 13 overall pick in this year’s draft), a pick swap in 2030, and a second-round pick in 2033.

This trade marks a major shift in Antetokounmpo’s career, as he moves to a new team with high expectations. Despite the change, his focus remains on the positive impact he can make through his foundation and his continued efforts to support communities around the world.
