Sam LaPorta’s Road to Recovery and Impact on the Lions Offense

The Detroit Lions had a challenging 2025 season, finishing with a 9-8 record and missing the playoffs for the first time in three years. Their offensive performance was notably down from the previous year, averaging just 22.3 points per game compared to 28.6 in 2024. A significant factor in this decline was the loss of their starting tight end, Sam LaPorta, who suffered a herniated disc in Week 10 against the Washington Commanders. This injury required surgery and ultimately ended his season.

LaPorta spent the entire offseason in a controlled recovery, attending walkthroughs during minicamp while the organization closely monitored his progress. With veterans set to report to training camp on July 28, there is renewed optimism about LaPorta’s return.

Full Medical Clearance for LaPorta

Sam LaPorta recently received full medical clearance, marking a major milestone in his recovery. While the Lions will determine the extent of his early practice involvement, reporter Tim Twentyman confirmed that LaPorta is expected to be a full participant in training camp. The surgery successfully repaired his herniated disc, and no complications have been reported during his recovery.

LaPorta had already set high expectations for his return after the 2025 season. “Hopefully by OTAs I’m up running around, and then, of course, we’ll be in pads in training camp,” he said. Head coach Dan Campbell echoed these sentiments at minicamp in June, stating, “We like where he is going, he is trending the right way.”

New Offensive Coordinator and Strategic Shift

LaPorta’s return comes alongside a significant change in the offensive staff. New coordinator Drew Petzing, who previously worked with tight end Trey McBride in Arizona, brings a scheme that heavily involves tight ends in the passing game. McBride, who became a first-team All-Pro under Petzing, shared his confidence in LaPorta’s potential. “Man, you’re going to love it. You’re going to eat, you’re going to have a great career,” McBride told LaPorta.

This shift could significantly impact LaPorta’s role and performance. In nine games last season, LaPorta posted career highs in catch percentage at 81.6 percent and yards per game at 54.3, indicating that his injury occurred during a strong stretch of play.

Contract Year and Extension Possibilities

LaPorta is entering his final year of his rookie deal and will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2026 season. While the Lions have not officially announced an extension, both sides have expressed interest in a long-term agreement. With all three of Detroit’s tight ends—LaPorta, Brock Wright, and Tyler Conklin—entering contract years, LaPorta remains a top priority for the front office.

Path to the Playoffs

Detroit’s path back to the playoffs could hinge on a fully healthy LaPorta. NFL analysts believe the Lions could make a dramatic turnaround in the NFC North in 2026, specifically citing a healthy LaPorta alongside quarterback Jared Goff and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown as key variables. The Lions will open the season against the Green Bay Packers in Week 1, and LaPorta will be on the field.
