Local Man Arrested on Animal Cruelty Charges

Jefferson County, Alabama has seen a recent arrest of a man accused of animal cruelty. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reported that a man was taken into custody following an investigation into the neglect of two dogs.

An off-duty deputy, who frequently patrols the Mount Olive area, received a tip about an individual seen on video attempting to abandon two dogs near Woodward Road. Acting on this information, deputies went to the 6000 block of Lakeside Drive to check on the animals.

Upon arrival, the deputies asked for and received permission to examine the dogs. They found both animals in poor health, malnourished and kept in unsanitary conditions. After consulting with a Jefferson County Animal Control Investigator, the deputies decided to arrest the suspect, 38-year-old Delmetrius Bishop.

Bishop was taken to the Jefferson County Jail and charged with first-degree cruelty to a dog or cat and second-degree cruelty to a dog or cat. His bond was set at $21,000, and he has since been released from jail.

The sheriff’s office praised the efforts of the deputies involved in the case. “Our deputies did a great job using the information and evidence received from a citizen to make an arrest. We always say, ‘See something, say something,’ and that’s exactly what happened. The information they provided made a big difference,” said Pettway.

Jefferson County Animal Control was also called to the residence, where the two dogs were taken to the Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS) for evaluation and treatment.

If anyone has additional information about the case, they are encouraged to contact the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at 205-325-1450 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
