A Historic London Estate Hits the Market for $33 Million

A piece of royal history is now up for sale, with a price tag of $33 million. This London estate, known as Ormeley Lodge, has a rich and dramatic past tied to one of the most infamous moments in British royal history. It’s the very location where Princess Diana is said to have confronted Queen Camilla about King Charles’s alleged infidelity.

According to the story, in 1989, Diana arrived unannounced at a birthday party for Annabel Elliot, Camilla’s sister, at Ormeley Lodge. At the time, Prince Charles was with his then-mistress, Camilla Parker Bowles, who would later become Queen Camilla. Lady Annabel shared with the Daily Mail that while Diana’s name was on the invitation, she had always avoided events involving Camilla. “I never thought for a minute she’d come,” she said.

But Diana did come. During the evening, guests moved to the drawing room, but Charles and Camilla remained behind. Diana found them along with an unnamed man and reportedly asked, “Can you leave us alone? I want to talk to Camilla alone.” Charles and the man left, and Diana confronted Camilla. She reportedly said, “I would just like you to know that I know exactly what is going on. I’m sorry I’m in the way. It must be hell for both of you…don’t treat me like an idiot.”

Camilla responded by saying, “You’ve got everything you ever wanted. You’ve got all the men in the world falling in love with you, and you’ve got two beautiful children. What more could you want?” Diana famously replied, “I want my husband.”

Ormeley Lodge is located in Richmond, South West London. The sprawling 10-bedroom, seven-bath, 15,814-square-foot estate is listed for over $33 million by Sotheby’s International Realty. According to the real estate agency, it is “One of London’s most remarkable private residences.” The property sits on 2.3 acres and features walled gardens, 11-plus-foot-tall ceilings, original fireplaces (dating back to the Stuart period), a wine cellar, tennis courts, a library, a private pool, storage rooms, a principal suite with a private study, a self-contained guest apartment, and an ancillary building called Ormeley Mews. This includes a garage, a gardeners’ facility, and a studio apartment.

The historic home was purchased in the 1970s by Sir James Goldsmith, Lady Annabel’s husband, and has been in the family for over half a century. One of the couple’s adult children, Ben Goldsmith, recently told the Daily Mail, “Ormeley has been our treasured home for our whole lives. But it’s time to pass it on to another lucky family.”

For those with the means, this iconic estate offers not just luxury, but a glimpse into a chapter of royal history that continues to captivate the public. If you happen to have an extra $33 million, Ormeley Lodge could be yours.
