Unusual Weather Conditions Could Impact the World Cup Final
The upcoming World Cup final is facing potential delays due to unusual weather conditions in the New York-New Jersey region. The match, scheduled for Sunday, July 19, at 3 p.m. ET at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, could be affected by wildfire smoke drifting from Ontario, Canada. This has raised concerns about the air quality and its impact on both players and fans.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently met with White House officials to discuss the potential health risks associated with the wildfire smoke. According to Sky Sports, the meeting focused on ensuring the safety of all participants and spectators.
Prediction Markets Reflect Confidence in the Match Proceeding
Despite the concerns, the prevailing expectation is that conditions will improve by Sunday, allowing the match to proceed as planned. Prediction markets such as Kalshi and Polymarket have opened betting opportunities on whether the final will be postponed. So far, bettors on both platforms seem confident that the game will take place as scheduled.
On Polymarket, the likelihood of a delay is only 5 percent, while Kalshi traders are currently assigning a 10 percent probability. Over $25,000 has been wagered on the market across both platforms, indicating a strong belief in the match going ahead.
Health Concerns and Risks
Weather and health authorities have issued warnings about the risks of outdoor exposure in such conditions. Eye and throat irritation, as well as breathing difficulties, are among the potential issues. Pulmonologist Dr. Vin Gupta has emphasized the dangers of the current air quality, stating that it can “cause an extreme amount of stress on the heart” and “is a very powerful and dangerous one-two punch to the human body.”
Fan and Player Welfare
Beyond concerns for fan health and safety—over 80,000 spectators are expected at MetLife Stadium—the welfare of the players has also become a significant issue. Both Spain and Argentina players could be exposed to hazardous air quality while competing outdoors for at least 90 minutes.
Even if conditions improve, with current forecasts predicting 80 degrees Fahrenheit and clear skies at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday, the possibility of lingering effects remains for both attendees and players.
Extended Halftime Break
One potential advantage for the players will be the extended halftime break, which is expected to run 5 to 10 minutes longer than usual. This will accommodate the World Cup final halftime show featuring notable performers such as Shakira and Justin Bieber.
