CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Thousands of workers helping build data centers are bringing change to local businesses in Cedar Rapids.

Not long ago, tables at Up In Smoke Barbeque in Czech Village sat mostly empty. Today, it’s a different story.

“Those guys are keeping our doors open right now,” said Tim Sines, owner of Up In Smoke Barbeque.

Sines opened his restaurant four years ago and said before data center construction, the business was at risk of closing. But now, construction crews working on Cedar Rapids’ data center projects have become a steady customer base, and many are coming back.

Sines said he’s seen catering orders ranging from 500 to 800 people.

“Getting repeat business says to me we’re doing something right,” he said.

Economic ripple effect

City leaders say it’s part of a broader ripple effect showing up across Cedar Rapids, especially in small businesses.

“Residents benefit when we expand our tax base because property taxes pay for all the services we deserve and expect,” said Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell.

That level of activity is fueling what O’Donnell calls a long-term expansion of Cedar Rapids’ tax base. Sines said he’s seeing the impact firsthand.

“I’m a small business. All my money goes right into this community, all my employees live right here, they’re from here,” Sines said.

That’s another reason O’Donnell said she supports the construction of data centers.

“You can’t argue with the 8,000 plus workers we have out there every day. We’ll have those jobs here for probably five years,” O’Donnell said.

While he knows the construction won’t last forever, Sines said the difference it’s made right now is the reason he’s still open.

The city said the projects represent more than $8 billion in investment and $54 million in community funds, with ripple effects expected to continue.

The Impact on Local Businesses

The influx of workers has had a significant impact on local businesses in Cedar Rapids. From restaurants to retail shops, the demand for goods and services has increased dramatically. This surge in activity has not only helped existing businesses stay afloat but has also encouraged new ventures to open in the area.

  • Restaurants like Up In Smoke Barbeque have seen a substantial increase in business due to the presence of construction crews.
  • Retail stores are reporting higher sales as workers spend their earnings locally.
  • Service providers, such as plumbers, electricians, and landscapers, are experiencing a rise in demand for their expertise.

This economic boost is not just temporary; it is creating a sustainable environment for growth. Small businesses that were once struggling are now thriving, thanks to the steady flow of customers brought in by the data center projects.

A Boost to the Tax Base

The expansion of the tax base is one of the most significant benefits of the data center construction. As more businesses thrive and attract more workers, the city sees an increase in revenue. This additional income is used to fund essential services such as schools, public safety, and infrastructure improvements.

Mayor O’Donnell emphasized the importance of this growth, stating that it directly benefits residents. “Residents benefit when we expand our tax base because property taxes pay for all the services we deserve and expect,” she said.

The city is also investing in community funds, which are used to support local initiatives and improve quality of life for residents. These funds are crucial in ensuring that the benefits of the data center projects are felt throughout the entire community.

Long-Term Growth and Stability

While the construction phase is temporary, the long-term effects of the data center projects are expected to last for years. The jobs created during the construction phase will provide employment opportunities for thousands of residents, and the completed data centers will bring ongoing economic activity to the area.

O’Donnell highlighted the importance of these jobs, noting that “we’ll have those jobs here for probably five years.” This sustained employment will help maintain the momentum of the local economy and ensure continued growth.

For business owners like Sines, the impact of the data center projects has been nothing short of transformative. “I’m a small business. All my money goes right into this community, all my employees live right here, they’re from here,” he said.

This sense of community and shared success is a key factor in the continued growth of Cedar Rapids. As the city continues to develop, the positive effects of the data center projects will be felt for years to come.

Conclusion

The data center projects in Cedar Rapids are not just about building infrastructure; they are about building a stronger, more vibrant community. The economic ripple effect is evident in the success of local businesses, the expansion of the tax base, and the creation of long-term jobs.

As the city moves forward, the collaboration between local businesses, city leaders, and the workers involved in the projects will be essential in maintaining this growth. The future of Cedar Rapids looks bright, and the data center projects are playing a crucial role in shaping that future.
