The Popularity of Mystery Books

The mystery genre has always held a special place in the hearts of readers. Its appeal lies in the intricate plots, suspenseful twists, and the thrill of solving a puzzle. Modern readers are drawn to both classic mysteries and new releases that keep them engaged from start to finish. One publication, Collider, recently highlighted some of the most acclaimed mystery books from the past two decades, offering insight into what makes these novels stand out.

Top Mystery Books of the Last 20 Years

Collider’s list featured several notable titles, including Lucy Foley’s Guest List, published in 2020. This novel is known for its clever narrative and engaging characters. Another standout was Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies from 2014, which captivated readers with its exploration of secrets and relationships. A.J. Finn’s The Woman in the Window, released in 2018, also made the list, praised for its psychological depth and gripping storyline.

At the top of the list was Tana French’s The Searcher, published in 2020. This book received high praise for its compelling storytelling and emotional depth. The protagonist, Cal Hooper, forms a touching relationship with Trey Reddy, a child he tries to help, which adds an emotional layer to the narrative. This dynamic was cited as a key factor in elevating the novel.

Tana French on the Inspiration Behind The Searcher

In a 2021 interview for the Library of Congress National Book Festival, Tana French discussed the inspiration behind The Searcher. She revealed that Westerns played a significant role in shaping the book. However, she clarified that her work was not directly influenced by Alan LeMay’s 1954 novel The Searchers or its 1956 film adaptation starring John Wayne.

French explained that while there were similarities in themes such as the quest and journey, she didn’t believe her book had much in common with The Searchers. “I don’t think it’s true that it was patterned after The Searchers, which I’ll be honest, I have only read part of,” she said. Instead, she was inspired by other Western works like Lonesome Dove, True Grit, and The Sisters Brothers.

The Title and Its Meaning

French also shared insights into why she chose the title The Searcher for her eighth novel. She acknowledged that there was a definite reference to the Western genre but emphasized that the title was chosen for its dual significance. “It felt like a good title that would fit both the main characters while also having that Western influence,” she explained.

This thoughtful approach to the title reflects the broader themes of the book, which blend elements of mystery with the traditional Western narrative. By drawing on these influences, French created a story that resonates with readers while maintaining its unique identity.

Conclusion

Tana French’s The Searcher stands out as a remarkable addition to the mystery genre, blending suspense with emotional depth. Her reflections on the inspiration behind the novel provide valuable context for readers interested in understanding the creative process. As the mystery genre continues to evolve, books like The Searcher remind us of the enduring appeal of stories that challenge and engage the mind.
