NFL Training Camps Begin, Offensive Line Challenges Loom

NFL training camps have officially kicked off, with the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks reporting on Friday and the rest of the league following suit over the next few weeks. This marks the beginning of a critical period for teams as they evaluate their rosters under live game conditions. For many, this is the first real opportunity to assess how their offensive lines perform, particularly at the tackle position, which is crucial for protecting the quarterback and setting up the running game.

For some teams, these early practices could reveal significant weaknesses, especially if there are gaps in the starting lineup. Currently, several experienced offensive tackles remain unsigned in free agency, including former Pro Bowlers who have been regular starters in recent years. With the pressure of preseason games, these players might find themselves in high demand before the start of the 2026 season.

Key Free Agent Tackles to Watch

Taylor Decker

Taylor Decker, a 6-foot-7 Ohio native, requested his release from Detroit after a decade as the team’s starting left tackle. His performance in 2025 was below his usual standards, with a PFF grade of 67.9, his lowest since 2017. However, this decline came despite playing just 14 games due to a shoulder injury. Even with that, his grade still ranked above the league average.

Decker has 140 career starts at left tackle, one of the most important positions in football. While he’s set to turn 33 in August, his experience and reliability make him an attractive option for teams in need of a proven pass protector, even on a short-term deal.

Jack Conklin

Jack Conklin missed nine games in 2025 due to injuries, including two concussions that ended his season early with the Browns. The team released him as part of a broader roster overhaul. At 31, his durability is a concern, as he hasn’t played a full season since 2019.

However, when healthy, Conklin has been one of the best run-blocking tackles in the league. He earned two Pro Bowl nods and helped Nick Chubb achieve four straight 1,000-yard rushing seasons. For teams looking for depth at right tackle, Conklin remains a low-cost flier.

Cam Robinson

Cam Robinson has bounced between multiple teams, starting 12 of 13 games at left tackle for Cleveland last year. Despite his experience, reports suggest he’s no longer viewed as a viable starting option at left tackle. However, his 114 career starts across different systems show his consistency and ability to hold down the tackle spot in a pinch.

If a team suffers an injury during camp, Robinson would be a valuable addition due to his experience and familiarity with various schemes.

Jonah Williams

Jonah Williams joined the Cardinals in 2024 to protect Kyler Murray but struggled with injuries, playing just 15 games over two seasons. Despite this, before his injuries, Williams was considered an elite prospect with the athleticism and technique to handle either tackle spot.

At 28, he’s the youngest player on this list and still has the potential to be a starting-caliber player if he can stay healthy. His ceiling has never been questioned, and he could be a valuable asset for any team looking to add depth.

Kelvin Beachum

Kelvin Beachum played all 17 games for Arizona last season, starting 11 as a versatile swing tackle. At 37, he remains unsigned due to his age, but his 172 career starts and consistent performance make him a reliable veteran.

Teams looking for a safe, low-risk option to add depth and experience could consider Beachum. His professionalism and experience would be invaluable in the locker room and on the field.

Final Thoughts

As training camps continue, teams will be closely watching how their offensive lines perform under pressure. The five free agent tackles mentioned above offer a mix of experience, versatility, and potential. Whether it’s a short-term solution or a long-term investment, each of these players brings something unique to the table. With the right fit, they could make a significant impact before the 2026 season begins.
