A 59-year-old man was sentenced on June 29 to seven-and-a-half years in prison and three years of post-prison supervision after pleading guilty to a violent attack on his wife at their home in Eugene. The incident, which occurred on March 28, 2025, involved domestic violence that left the victim with serious injuries and long-term consequences.

The event took place during a dinner between David Dwayne Vaale and his wife of nine years. According to the Lane County District Attorney’s Office, the conversation turned into an argument when Vaale expressed frustration over losing money gambling. The situation escalated quickly as Vaale pushed his wife to the floor, climbed on top of her, placed his knee on her chest, and repeatedly punched her.

Vaale then struck his wife on the head with a steel mug, causing multiple lacerations that required stitches. He reportedly told her, “You can die, and I’m going to kill you.” The assault continued as Vaale grabbed a hammer and smashed his wife’s belongings before calling 911. When he handed the phone to his wife, he said, “Tell the effing cops I’ll be at CJ’s, that’s where I’ll be.”

Following the incident, the Eugene Police Department investigated and arrested Vaale. A grand jury later indicted him on charges including second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, felony strangulation, and unlawful use of a weapon—each of which constitutes domestic violence.

On June 29, Vaale pleaded guilty to the first-degree assault and strangulation charges. According to the DA’s Office, the victim provided a written statement to the court detailing how the attack changed her life and the ongoing effects of her concussion. Vaale apologized for his actions, stating that his sentence would serve as his atonement.

This case highlights the severity of domestic violence and the long-lasting impact it can have on victims. It also underscores the importance of legal accountability for those who commit such acts. The judicial system plays a critical role in ensuring justice is served while also providing support and protection for victims.

The sentencing of Vaale sends a clear message that domestic violence will not be tolerated and that perpetrators will face serious consequences for their actions. It also serves as a reminder of the need for awareness, education, and resources to help prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

Domestic violence remains a significant issue across the United States, with countless individuals affected by its physical, emotional, and psychological toll. Communities must continue to work together to create safe environments where victims feel empowered to seek help and where abusers are held accountable for their actions.

Support services, such as shelters, counseling, and legal assistance, are essential in helping victims recover and rebuild their lives. Additionally, public education campaigns can raise awareness about the signs of domestic violence and encourage early intervention.

In cases like Vaale’s, the legal system serves as both a deterrent and a means of justice. By holding individuals responsible for their actions, courts help ensure that victims receive the protection and support they need to heal and move forward. It is through these combined efforts that society can make progress in addressing and ultimately preventing domestic violence.
