Madison Symphony Orchestra Names New Music Director

Madison, Wisconsin — The Madison Symphony Orchestra (MSO) has officially announced that Laura Jackson will be its next music director. This marks a significant milestone for the organization, as Jackson will be only the fifth music director in the MSO’s 100-year history.

Jackson first made an impression as a guest conductor with the MSO last April. During her performances, she expressed a deep connection with the musicians and was impressed by their adaptability and responsiveness.

“During my April concerts, I felt a wonderful connection to these musicians and was astounded by their flexibility and responsiveness,” Jackson shared. “What I see throughout the organization is a willingness to go the extra mile to serve and connect with the people of Madison.”

The Madison Symphony Orchestra highlighted Jackson’s reputation as a conductor who brings a powerful interpretation to Romantic-era compositions. She is also known for championing new works and nurturing young talent. Her career has taken her across the country, where she has collaborated with prestigious orchestras such as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Colorado Symphony, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Ravinia.

Robert Reed, the Executive Director of the Madison Symphony Orchestra, expressed excitement about welcoming Jackson to the organization. He emphasized her dynamic presence on the podium and her ability to curate meaningful musical experiences.

“She is among the most dynamic conductors of her generation, and we look forward to her leadership, her curation of compelling musical experiences, and her commitment to expanding MSO’s mission,” Reed said. “She is the ideal person to lead the MSO forward as we begin the next 100 years of the Madison Symphony Orchestra, and I look forward to developing a strong partnership with her.”

Jackson will start her tenure as the music director designate in November. She will assume the full-time role of music director beginning in the 2027-28 season under a five-year contract. In addition to her new position with the MSO, she will continue to serve as the music director and conductor of the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, a role she has held since 2009.

This appointment signals a new chapter for the Madison Symphony Orchestra as it looks to build on its legacy and expand its impact within the community. With Jackson’s leadership, the organization aims to create even more engaging and diverse musical experiences for audiences.
