Tragedy Strikes San Francisco Bay as Boat Sinks Near Alcatraz
A tragic incident occurred near Alcatraz, a former prison and popular tourist site in San Francisco Bay, when a boat carrying 20 people sank. One person has been confirmed dead, while three others remain missing. Local fire and police teams, along with the US Coast Guard, are working tirelessly to locate those still unaccounted for.
Immediate Response and Rescue Efforts
Fire Chief Dean Crispen reported that rescuers first received a call about a boat on fire, located 600 yards (548 meters) off Alcatraz Island around 3:35 pm. A short Instagram video posted by San Francisco’s mayor captured the initial response. Upon reaching the scene, rescuers found the boat had capsized, and efforts were made to resuscitate the individual who later succumbed to their injuries.
“They immediately initiated CPR, transported that patient to the shore. They were declared deceased,” Crispen stated.
The fire department initially reported two missing individuals but later updated the number to three after receiving witness statements. This highlights the ongoing uncertainty and urgency surrounding the search.

Ongoing Search and Advanced Techniques
San Francisco Fire Department Lieutenant Elias Mariano told AFP news agency that the search for the remaining missing individuals will continue “through the night.” Rescue teams are employing advanced techniques such as thermal imaging, tide prediction, and modeling to guide their efforts effectively.
Mariano also mentioned that the boat involved was a privately owned cabin cruiser motorboat from Stockton, California. Authorities have not yet determined whether the vessel was heading toward Alcatraz, a major tourist attraction known for its shuttered buildings and historical significance.

At least one person was severely injured in the water when rescuers arrived, according to the Los Angeles Times. Fortunately, authorities confirmed that the remaining 16 passengers were rescued safely.
