Tadej Pogacar Finds Inspiration in Novak Djokovic’s Resilience

Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar has shared how he finds strength in the mental fortitude of tennis legend Novak Djokovic, especially when facing hostile crowds during his cycling competitions. The Slovenian rider, who is currently leading the race for his fifth Tour de France title, has spoken about how he draws inspiration from Djokovic’s ability to remain focused and composed under pressure.

During a recent stage victory on Bastille Day, Pogacar encountered boos from parts of the crowd. Instead of letting the negative energy affect him, he immediately thought of Djokovic, whose career has been marked by similar challenges. The Serb has faced intense scrutiny and hostility throughout his 20-year career, yet he has consistently used these moments as motivation rather than distractions.

Pogacar praised Djokovic’s resilience, noting that while cycling rarely experiences the same level of crowd hostility as sports like tennis or football, negative reactions are still part of elite competition. He highlighted Djokovic as an example of an athlete who has overcome adversity from the stands, despite becoming one of the most successful players in history.

The Slovenian rider emphasized that Djokovic’s ability to transform negative energy into motivation has inspired many athletes across different sports. This mindset has earned admiration beyond the tennis world, with Pogacar being the latest elite athlete to acknowledge Djokovic’s influence.

For one of cycling’s biggest stars, Djokovic’s ability to stay calm under pressure has become a blueprint for handling the challenges of competing at the highest level. His mental strength has allowed him to thrive in high-stakes environments, even when faced with opposition from the crowd.

Djokovic’s mindset continues to inspire athletes across disciplines. Throughout his career, the Serbian star has often spoken about turning negative energy into motivation, producing some of his greatest performances in front of crowds that largely supported his opponents, such as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

This resilience has not only helped Djokovic achieve success but has also made him a role model for other athletes. Pogacar’s acknowledgment of Djokovic’s influence shows that the Serb’s impact extends far beyond his Major titles and records.

When asked about the experience of facing boos, Pogacar explained that in cycling, it is less common to see the same level of hostility as in tennis or football. However, he admitted that there are still instances where fans express their disapproval.

“In tennis, it’s one-on-one, and of course, the fans are split 50-50. In our case, when someone boos me, or someone else, they boo the whole field, because we all go through together,” he said.

Pogacar added that he always thinks about tennis, specifically Novak Djokovic, and the mental strength he has shown throughout his career. “I think he has had one of the most difficult careers in that regard, with a lot of booing and sometimes for no reason, even though he is one of the greatest.”

He concluded by saying that whenever someone boos him, he draws inspiration from Djokovic. “So when someone boos me, I think of Novak, and I draw inspiration from him.”
