Overview of the Nighttime Attack
On the night of July 4, Russia launched a series of attacks on Ukraine, utilizing a combination of ballistic missiles, guided air-launched missiles, and a large number of drones. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that their defenses managed to intercept most of the incoming threats, although some damage was still inflicted.
Types of Missiles and Drones Used
During the attack, Russia deployed several types of weapons:
- One Iskander-M ballistic missile was launched from the temporarily occupied Autonomous Republic of Crimea.
- One Kh-59/69 guided air-launched missile was fired from the Black Sea.
- A total of 86 attack drones were launched, including various models such as:
- Shahed drones (including jet-powered variants)
- Gerbera
- Italmas
- Parodiya decoy drones
These drones were launched from multiple directions, including Bryansk, Kursk, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Millerovo, Oryol (Russia), and Donetsk.
Ukrainian Defense Efforts
The Ukrainian Defense Forces employed a multi-faceted approach to counter the aerial assault. This included:
- Aircraft
- Anti-aircraft missile units
- Electronic warfare units
- Unmanned systems units
- Mobile fire groups
According to preliminary data as of 8:30 a.m., Ukrainian air defenses had successfully shot down or suppressed 69 enemy drones, including Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas, and other types, across the northern, southern, and eastern parts of the country.
Impact of the Attack
Despite the successful interception of many drones, the attack still resulted in damage at 16 locations due to hits from two missiles and 17 attack drones. Additionally, debris from intercepted targets fell at five additional sites.
The Ukrainian Air Force warned that the attack was ongoing, with several enemy drones still in Ukrainian airspace. They urged civilians to follow safety guidelines.
Recent Russian Attacks on Ukraine
As previously reported, Russian forces conducted a missile strike on civilian infrastructure in the Odesa region on the evening of July 3. The attack caused a fire in a warehouse storing food products, which spread to nearby buildings. Two people were injured in the incident.
In another significant attack, Russian forces targeted Sumy with a large number of drones and guided aerial bombs. This strike caused extensive destruction, left civilians injured, and resulted in fatalities.
Conclusion
The ongoing attacks by Russian forces continue to pose a serious threat to Ukraine. While the Ukrainian defense forces have made efforts to mitigate the damage, the persistent use of drones and missiles highlights the evolving nature of modern warfare. Civilians remain vulnerable, and the need for continued vigilance and support for defense operations is crucial.
