Israel Destroys Underground Hezbollah Complex in Southern Lebanon

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) conducted a significant military operation on Sunday, destroying an underground complex belonging to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon. This facility was reportedly equipped with hundreds of weapons and several rocket silos, according to the IDF.

“The underground complex was constructed using technology and expertise provided by the Iranian terror regime,” stated the IDF in its official announcement. The operation took place in the Majdal Zoun area, located approximately five miles north of the border between Israel and Lebanon, within the IDF-controlled security zone. Prior to the operation, Jerusalem had informed the United States of its plans, as reported by the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office.

Joint Statement from Israeli Leaders

In a joint statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz emphasized the importance of the operation. “The tunnel, which was over 200 meters [650 feet] long and more than 25 meters [80 feet] deep, contained hundreds of weapons and several launch silos intended to target the territory of the State of Israel and its citizens,” they noted.

They also highlighted that the IDF would continue its efforts to eliminate terrorist infrastructure in the region. “IDF commanders and fighters will remain in the security zone in Southern Lebanon and will continue to destroy terrorist infrastructure, remove threats to northern communities and safeguard the security of Israel’s citizens,” the statement concluded.

Framework Agreement Between Israel and Lebanon

Israel and Lebanon recently signed a US-brokered framework agreement aimed at removing Hezbollah from Southern Lebanon and dismantling “associated infrastructure” in the area. This agreement is part of ongoing efforts to reduce tensions between the two nations and prevent further conflict.

Hezbollah has been actively launching rocket and drone attacks from Southern Lebanon against Israel, particularly following the targeted killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Tehran on February 28, during what Iran called “Operation Roaring Lion.” On March 2, the group renewed its attacks, prompting Israel to launch a broad aerial campaign against Hezbollah targets.

Escalation of Hostilities

In response to the renewed hostilities, Israel expanded its military operations in Lebanon, aiming to prevent cross-border attacks on Israeli communities. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun vowed to take “the impossible” steps to stop the cross-border violence between Israel and Hezbollah, and even moved to outlaw the Iranian proxy group.

Israeli and Lebanese officials subsequently held five rounds of direct talks at the U.S. State Department in Washington, resulting in the framework of understandings reached on Friday. This agreement is conditional upon Hezbollah withdrawing from the southern region of Lebanon.

Prolonged Military Presence

Defense Minister Israel Katz stated on Saturday that the IDF has been instructed to prepare for a “prolonged stay” in the security zone in Southern Lebanon. “The key principle established in the framework is that there will be no Israeli redeployment from Southern Lebanon, no withdrawal whatsoever, as long as the Hezbollah terrorist organization has not been disarmed throughout Lebanon, and the safety of northern residents is guaranteed,” he said.

This development underscores the ongoing commitment of Israel to maintain security in the region and prevent any potential threats from Hezbollah. As the situation continues to evolve, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of Israeli citizens and stabilizing the volatile border area.
