A photograph shared on Facebook offers a glimpse into the past of the Siders family, revealing a time when they appeared to be a normal, happy household. The image shows young Gary Siders Jr., then just a baby, sitting on his mother’s lap. This was decades before the four adults from this family were arrested in Hamden, Ohio, for allegedly abusing 16 children who were kept in what authorities have described as a “house of horrors.”
The photo was posted by Christina Siders, 66, the grandmother, who was also arrested along with her husband, Gary Siders, 73. In the image, the young couple is seen enjoying a sunny day, seemingly unaware of the dark future that awaited them. Other photos from different times show a family that, at first glance, seemed perfectly ordinary. There are pictures of family gatherings and a 2023 throwback photo of the elderly couple, who appear clean and smiling.

The 16 children, all under the care of Elizabeth Siders, 33, and her husband Gary Siders Jr., 36, were discovered last week in a crumbling home in Vinton County, Ohio. They were confined to a small 12 x 12 room filled with trash and feces, living in conditions worse than those of livestock. Elizabeth, along with her husband, was arrested alongside her parents, Gary and Christina Siders.

Elizabeth’s family has stated that they lost contact with her after she married Gary Siders Jr. when she was just 15 years old. At the time, he was 18. Their marriage took place in West Virginia, where the state only required parental permission for the union, without any investigation into the situation of the pregnant teen.
Since then, Elizabeth has lived with the Siders family, moving with them across Ohio over nearly two decades. The family’s history of constant movement may have contributed to the lack of records about the children’s education or medical care.

Authorities found the children in a dilapidated structure covering just three-and-a-half square meters. The children, ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years, were described as looking like “feral animals” by investigators. The Vinton County Sheriff’s Office discovered them during a search warrant execution linked to an ongoing investigation.
Deputies were shocked by the scene: a house covered in human waste, with no signs of proper hygiene or care. Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson called the conditions “pure evil,” stating that some of the children could not even speak or write. One 18-year-old girl was found unable to write her own name.

Wilson emphasized the severity of the situation, saying, “It was terrible. They looked like almost feral animals. It was terrible.” The children had been living in these conditions for at least four years.

Despite claims from Elizabeth that some of the older children had access to phones and social media, there were no school records showing that any of the children were enrolled in any form of education. Seven of the children were taken to Columbus hospitals, with two requiring emergency airlifts. One child remained in critical condition, while others received medical attention.

The four suspects have no prior connections to the region, and investigators believe they moved frequently to avoid creating any documentation of their presence. “These folks were pretty good at hiding these kids,” Wilson said.
The four individuals appeared in court on Wednesday morning and are being held on $300,000 bail. Gary Siders, the grandfather, was released this week due to a medical condition and is currently in a medical facility with a GPS tracker.
