Buc-ee’s Expands to Wisconsin with New Travel Center in Oak Creek

Buc-ee’s, the beloved convenience store and gas station chain known for its beaver mascot, is making its way closer to the Chicago area. The popular brand has started construction on its first location in Wisconsin, set to open in Oak Creek. This new site is approximately 15 miles south of Milwaukee and about 77 miles north of Chicago, making it a convenient stop for travelers heading through the region.

The city of Oak Creek recently shared updates on the progress at the future Buc-ee’s Travel Center. According to the city’s post, there is already a driveway entrance to the site, fencing surrounding the area, and several large pieces of equipment in place to begin the groundwork. The city also mentioned that activity at the site will increase in August and continue until the center opens. While the current expected opening date is early 2028, the timeline could shift depending on construction progress.

Photos shared by the city show the site in its current state, with some construction vehicles and a cleared section of grass. The upcoming Buc-ee’s Travel Center will be located on the southwest corner of I-94 and E. Elm Road.

Despite the excitement around the new location, Buc-ee’s did not provide a comment to NBC Chicago regarding the groundbreaking. However, the city of Oak Creek approved a proposal for the Buc-ee’s Travel Center and gas station along I-94 south of Milwaukee last year. WTMJ, the NBC affiliate in Milwaukee, reported that the chain expects over 10,000 vehicles to visit the 73,000 square foot location every day. Its strategic placement next to the highway makes it an ideal stop for drivers traveling through the area.

Buc-ee’s has become a favorite among travelers across the United States. With several locations in states such as Texas, where it has more than a dozen stores, the chain offers much more than the typical convenience store. Customers can find a wide variety of souvenirs, home goods, and a full bakery. The chain is also known for having “the cleanest restrooms in America” and signature food items like beef jerky, Beaver Nuggets, and brisket.

Currently, Buc-ee’s has more than 50 locations in nine states, primarily along interstates in the South. However, the chain has been expanding northward in recent years, with this new location in Oak Creek being a significant step in that direction.

Unfortunately, Illinois residents may have to wait a bit longer for a Buc-ee’s near them. There are no upcoming plans to open a location in the state, according to a company spokesperson. When asked for comment, the spokesperson said, “Thank you for reaching out. However, we have no comment at this time.”

Unlike many other chains, all Buc-ee’s locations are corporate-owned, which means that franchisees cannot open a location in Illinois. This decision highlights the company’s commitment to maintaining its brand standards across all locations. For now, the focus remains on the upcoming opening in Oak Creek, which is sure to bring excitement to the local community and travelers alike.
