The Los Angeles Lakers are set to have a very active summer, with more than half of their current roster either entering NBA free agency or having the opportunity to explore the open market. Among the players on the team, veteran center Deandre Ayton has a player option for the 2026-27 season worth $8.1 million. Throughout the offseason, there has been uncertainty about Ayton’s future, but recent developments may have clarified his intentions.

Deandre Ayton is expected to pick up his player option for next season, according to reports. This decision comes despite the Lakers’ ongoing efforts to find an upgrade at the center position this summer. The team has shown interest in acquiring a top-tier center, and it’s clear that Ayton will remain with the team for now.

However, even with Ayton’s decision to opt into his contract, the Lakers could still choose to trade him before the next season begins. The team’s primary focus right now is to bring in an elite center, as requested by superstar guard Luka Doncic. General manager Rob Pelinka and the new front office are working diligently to meet Doncic’s demands.

Lakers Still Searching for an A-List Center

The Lakers’ determination to find a center upgrade has raised questions about LeBron James’ future with the team, as he is no longer the top priority. The team’s attention is currently on securing a high-impact big man, which has led to speculation about potential trades and free agent signings.

There are several options available to the Lakers, though not all are guaranteed to be easy to acquire. Restricted free agents like Walker Kessler and Jalen Duren could be viable targets, but both players are likely to have their offers matched by their respective teams. Other potential candidates include unrestricted free agents such as Mitchell Robinson, Robert Williams III, Nikola Vucevic, Jusuf Nurkic, Zach Collins, Nick Richards, Kevin Love, and Andre Drummond.

While none of these players are considered “A-list” centers, some could be strong fits for the Lakers. Mitchell Robinson and Robert Williams III, in particular, are seen as intriguing options due to their skills and potential impact on the team.

As the Lakers continue their search for a center, the situation surrounding Deandre Ayton remains a key point of discussion. His decision to pick up his player option provides some clarity, but the team’s plans for the future are still unfolding. Fans will be watching closely to see how the Lakers navigate this critical period of roster construction.
