Wildfire Smoke from Canada Affects Air Quality in New Hampshire

Wildfire smoke originating from Canada has created a noticeable yellowish haze across the skies in New Hampshire. This phenomenon has led to health warnings issued by local officials, urging residents to take necessary precautions.

The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (DES) has issued a Code Yellow alert for Wednesday, advising individuals who are sensitive to air pollution to be cautious. On Thursday, the alert level was raised to Code Orange, indicating that the concentration of fine particulate matter could pose a risk to those with pre-existing health conditions and even healthy individuals may need to limit outdoor activities.

This is not the first time that smoke from Canadian wildfires has impacted New Hampshire. Health experts have noted that such conditions present unique challenges, particularly for hospital staff and vulnerable populations, including the elderly.

Impact on Public Health

Dr. Adam Darnobid, a physician at Monadnock Community Hospital, shared insights into the current situation. He mentioned that patients who were previously unaffected are now experiencing respiratory issues. “We’re seeing people who might not have been affected in years past coming in and seeing us in the ER, having trouble breathing, having respiratory distress for sure, making it hard for them to breathe,” he said.

Exposure to fine particles can lead to various symptoms, including chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, and difficulty breathing. Individuals with asthma or other lung diseases may find it challenging to breathe as deeply or vigorously as usual, potentially leading to coughing and shortness of breath.

Expected Improvements and Ongoing Concerns

Despite the current concerns, DES officials anticipate that conditions will improve by Friday afternoon. However, they also note that smoke plumes may still linger in the area. Residents are advised to monitor air quality updates and follow health guidelines accordingly.
