The Michigan Wolverines have not made the College Football Playoff since their national championship win in 2023 under Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh has since moved on to the Los Angeles Chargers, and the Wolverines have already parted ways with his successor, Sherrone Moore. In an effort to restore their reputation, the program has hired Kyle Whittingham, who previously led the Utah Utes to three conference championships. With a strong roster, Michigan has the potential to start the season ranked and could be a contender for the College Football Playoff this fall if Whittingham can maximize the performance of quarterback Bryce Underwood.

Key Games That Will Define Michigan’s Season

Oklahoma at Michigan (September 12)

One of the first major tests for Whittingham will come in Week 2 when Oklahoma visits the “Big House.” The Sooners made the College Football Playoff last season and defeated Michigan 24-13 in Norman last year. Oklahoma is expected to be a strong contender again this season, making this game a crucial early-season challenge for the Wolverines. A win here would set a positive tone for the rest of the season, especially with a demanding conference schedule ahead.

Indiana at Michigan (October 24)

Michigan faces another tough matchup against Indiana, led by head coach Curt Cignetti. Cignetti has proven to be a successful coach, winning many games in his first year at the program. In 2024, Indiana defeated Michigan 20-15, marking only the second time the Hoosiers have beaten the Wolverines since 1988. With Cignetti reloading his roster during the offseason, Indiana looks poised to return to the College Football Playoff. A win over Indiana would be a significant statement for Whittingham and the team.

Michigan at Ohio State (November 28)

The final key game of the season will be a road trip to Ohio Stadium for “The Game” against Ohio State. This matchup is one of the most anticipated in college football, and the Buckeyes are heavily favored due to the return of quarterback Julian Sayin and standout receiver Jeremiah Smith. The last time Michigan visited Columbus, they pulled off a surprising 13-10 upset, which left lasting memories for fans in both cities. This game could determine whether Michigan makes the College Football Playoff or ends up in a bowl game.
