A New Era for Arrow McLaren

Arrow McLaren officially announced on Monday that Scott Dixon and Felix Rosenqvist will join Pato O’Ward at the organization starting with the 2027 NTT IndyCar Series season. This development marks the official departures of Christian Lundgaard and Nolan Siegel from the team, signaling a significant shift in the team’s strategy.

The announcement came just a day after O’Ward and Lundgaard secured a 1-2 finish at Mid-Ohio, and shortly after Dixon, a six-time IndyCar champion and 59-time race winner, revealed his decision to leave Chip Ganassi Racing after 25 years. The move is a strategic one for McLaren, as it retains its star driver, O’Ward, while also adding the defending Indianapolis 500 winner, Rosenqvist, and a legendary veteran in Dixon, who remains competitive despite his age.

Short-Term Gains for McLaren

In the short term, this deal appears to be a win for McLaren. The team now has a strong lineup that includes O’Ward, Rosenqvist, and Dixon. O’Ward is expected to continue winning races for years, while Rosenqvist, at 34, has the potential to become a title threat. Dixon, who turns 46 in July, may not be around for more than a decade, but even in the twilight of his career, he can still secure race wins and maintain a consistent presence in the top-10 of the standings.

However, the long-term implications for Chip Ganassi Racing are worth considering. Ganassi currently has four-time champion Alex Palou, who is on track to win a fourth consecutive and fifth overall championship this season. Palou has already claimed 23 victories, including the 2025 Indianapolis 500. Kyffin Simpson, though still developing, is a young talent with plenty of time to grow.

Chip Ganassi’s Opportunity

The key question now is whether Chip Ganassi will pursue Christian Lundgaard, who is having a breakout campaign this season. Lundgaard has won twice this year and is currently third in the IndyCar standings after 11 races in 2026. While he needs to improve his competitiveness on ovals, especially at Indianapolis, there is still time for him to develop. He has already proven himself as a threat on road and street courses and has the potential to be a championship-caliber driver, especially if Palou ever experiences a downturn.

If Ganassi manages to sign Lundgaard and pair him with Palou, the duo could dominate the championship for years. Even if their performance at Indianapolis and other ovals is inconsistent, the combination could be nearly unstoppable.

The Future of McLaren

McLaren’s new lineup is set to be formidable for several years. However, the team’s current setup seems to be focused on short-term success rather than long-term stability. Dixon’s recent performance has been mixed, as he only won once last year and is facing his first winless season since 2004. Rosenqvist’s only career victory is this year’s Indy 500, which highlights the need for more consistency.

Despite these challenges, McLaren is in a strong position with its current drivers. The team has the potential to remain competitive for years to come. However, the real test will come if Ganassi successfully secures Lundgaard, which could create a powerful duo that is difficult to match.

The Ball is in Ganassi’s Court

Ultimately, the decision now rests with Chip Ganassi. Whether or not he can capitalize on the opportunity to sign Lundgaard will determine the future landscape of the IndyCar Series. The question remains: can Ganassi knock down the layup that is signing Lundgaard?
