A Family’s Journey Through Love and Adversity
The McBee family has always been a central part of the reality TV series The McBee Dynasty: Real American Cowboys. In a recent episode, the family came together for a moment that would become one of the most emotional in the show’s history. The event took place on July 6, when Cole McBee proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Kacie Adkison, in front of their loved ones, including Steve McBee Sr., who made a rare appearance during the episode.
This moment occurred before Steve Sr. began serving time in prison for crop insurance fraud. Despite the challenges the family has faced, they have found strength in each other. They believe that Steve Sr.’s absence has actually brought them closer together as they focus on moving forward.
A Special Moment with Family
During the episode, the McBee family gathered for a heartfelt occasion. Cole, who is 26 years old, decided to propose to Kacie, 28, in front of their family and friends. He expressed how important it was to have his father there for such a significant moment.
“Having all our family and friends here, especially my dad, is the best thing ever,” Cole said. “Life will really be changing a lot when my dad goes away. I just wanted to propose while he’s still here and enjoy this with everybody.”
Steve Sr., who is 54, was seen smiling as Cole and Kacie entered holding their daughter, Blair, after the proposal. Other family members, including Cole’s mother Kristi, his brothers Steven Jr., Jesse, Brayden, sister-in-law Alli, Kacie’s mother, and Jimmy, were also present.
Preparing for the Proposal
Before the proposal, Cole visited a jeweler to purchase Kacie’s engagement ring. He explained that the family had been dealing with financial strain due to farming debt and Steve Sr.’s sentencing in the crop insurance fraud case. However, he felt that Kacie deserved the ring she had always wanted.
Cole revealed that Kacie had previously told him she wasn’t ready to get engaged and wanted to see him make changes before taking the next step. Since then, he has matured, reduced his drinking, and feels more stable after building their home and welcoming their daughter, Blair.
“Kacie and Blair are my motivation through everything,” he said.
Cole ultimately chose a large radiant-cut diamond after saving for a long time, joking that Kacie had made one request: she wanted something “big.”

The Proposal Scene
The proposal took place beneath a gazebo at a hotel, where family members helped decorate the space and kept Kacie distracted by making her think she was headed to dinner after a spa day. As he waited for her arrival, Cole admitted he was nervous, remembering her previous hesitation about getting engaged.
Once she arrived, he called Kacie his best friend, his hunting partner, and praised her as an incredible mother to Blair before getting down on one knee. Kacie said yes, later calling the proposal everything she had dreamed of. She said there was never any doubt once she realized she loved Cole, while Cole joked that he’s officially off the market.
Life After the Sentence
Although the proposal was filmed before Steve Sr. reported to prison, it aired months after he began serving his sentence at a federal prison camp in Yankton, S.D. In 2024, he pleaded guilty in a multi-million-dollar crop insurance fraud case. On Oct. 16, 2025, he was sentenced to 24 months in prison and ordered to pay $4,022,124 in restitution.
Steve McBee Sr. surrendered to federal prison on Dec. 1, 2025, to begin serving a 24-month sentence.
Moving Forward as a Family
Speaking exclusively to Daily News Lite, Steven Jr. said the family has shifted its focus away from hoping for a presidential pardon and instead is concentrating on moving forward.
“We’re just putting our heads down, grinding and working through things as if nothing is going to happen,” Steven said. “I think that’s the best way to work through this. If that happened, then great. But we don’t expect it, and we’re working through it either way.”
Cole said his father has remained optimistic while serving his sentence.
“He’s doing as good as he can be for the circumstances,” Cole told Daily News Lite. “He’s a very optimistic person, so he’s staying positive. He’s trying to take this situation — we all are — and we’re learning from it as much as we can. We’re trying to grow from it and try and do better from everything here forward.”
Despite the difficult chapter, both brothers said their father’s absence has ultimately brought the family closer together.
“There were some very, very rough days for our family,” Cole said. “But it definitely brought us all closer together and really made us stick together as a family more than ever.”
