The Challenges of Maintaining Health After a Professional Sports Career

Professional athletes often spend their entire careers under strict guidelines about how to take care of their bodies. This structured environment can be incredibly supportive, but it can also create a sense of dependency. Once that structure is gone, some athletes struggle to maintain the same healthy habits.

Staying in shape for the game and maintaining health after retiring are two very different things. George Gervin, a Hall of Famer, learned this lesson the hard way in October 2008. At that time, what ESPN described as a “dose of reality” hit “The Iceman.”

Gervin’s Remarkable NBA Career

Throughout his playing days, Gervin was known for his incredible durability. The numbers support this claim. Over nine seasons with the San Antonio Spurs, he played all 82 games four times. He never dropped below 72 games in any full season. His final NBA year with the Chicago Bulls at age 33 was equally impressive—he didn’t miss a single regular-season game and started 75 of them.

Gervin’s production remained strong as well. The iconic swingman averaged 16.2 points per game. Much of that came while stepping in for Michael Jordan, who missed most of his sophomore year due to a broken left foot. Gervin never landed on a long-term injury list. The nine-time All-Star simply kept playing night after night. Somewhere along the way, he likely developed a deep trust in his body. Why wouldn’t he? It rarely gave him a reason not to.

The Consequences of Dropping Healthy Habits

Despite his success, problems eventually arose—though they came later. They arrived after Gervin had already retired from professional basketball, which in its final stages saw him play overseas for TDK Manresa in Spain.

Like many former athletes, Gervin didn’t carry the same discipline into his post-retirement life. Years passed after his 1990 retirement before the consequences caught up with him. During this time, his playing weight of 185 pounds reportedly increased to 245. The regular checkups that came with team life were also gone.

It took months of encouragement from his wife, Joyce, before he finally went in for a physical. When he did, a nurse checked his blood pressure on one arm and then again on the other, discovering hypertension. This condition builds pressure against the artery walls without warning signs and puts constant strain on the heart.

A Wake-Up Call and a New Approach

Gervin didn’t know this yet. His doctor, Gregory Johnson, made sure he understood. And he didn’t soften the message.

“Johnson gave him a dose of reality. He explained to Gervin that hypertension is the ‘silent killer.’ The doctor also said if he were too stubborn to take medications he would die,” wrote ESPN.

That was the turning point. Gervin changed his approach despite usually having an aversion to taking medication. The Spurs legend also made the gym part of his daily routine, getting in at least 30 minutes of cardio on a treadmill or elliptical. His diet changed too. Fried foods were out, replaced by more fresh vegetables and fruit.

At the time, Ice was “on his way to manageable blood pressure” while also “spreading the word.” Now 74, with no major health issues reported since, that wake-up call seems to have been exactly what the Michigan native needed. And it’s a mighty good thing he listened.

Lessons for Other Athletes

Gervin’s story serves as a powerful reminder for other athletes. The structure and discipline that come with professional sports can be a double-edged sword. While it helps maintain peak performance during a career, it can also lead to complacency once that structure is gone.

For many, the transition to a post-sports life can be challenging. Without the same routines, it’s easy to fall back into unhealthy habits. Gervin’s experience shows the importance of staying proactive about health, even when the immediate pressures of competition are gone.

His journey also highlights the role of family support and medical guidance in making necessary lifestyle changes. By taking these steps, Gervin was able to turn his health around and continue living a fulfilling life. His story is a testament to the power of awareness, discipline, and the will to change.
