BEECH ISLAND, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) – The Storm Branch Road bridge project has once again missed its scheduled deadline, this time failing to meet the July target, as construction continues into its third year. State transportation officials have now set their sights on reopening the bridge before the upcoming school year begins.
Neighbors frustrated by extended closure
Longtime resident Dennis Holloway, who has lived near the bridge for about 40 years, said the detour has significantly increased his travel time.
“Just to get to that person, it was about 5 minutes. Now it takes about 20 to 30 minutes,” Holloway said.
Holloway acknowledged the extended timeline while noting one upside.
“You have to go so far away, but it’s a lot less traffic, which I like, you know,” he said.
He added, “I guess they got to do what they got to do. But as I said, it’s taking a long time.”
State rep points to funding as key difference
South Carolina State Rep. Melissa Oremus said she has relayed community concerns to the South Carolina Department of Transportation but has limited influence over the project’s pace.
“I’m at the mercy of DOT like the rest of us,” Oremus said.
Oremus addressed comparisons to the nearby Vaucluse Bridge project, which was completed in under a year.
“A lot of people were looking at the Vaucluse Bridge and seeing, okay, that got done in less than a year. Why can’t the Storm Branch Bridge — the difference in that one, federal funding. When you’re going over an interstate and there’s federal funding, the money is there a lot quicker,” Oremus said.
What’s left before reopening
SCDOT said the project has made significant progress, with much of the roadway and bridge substructure work complete. In the coming weeks, crews will focus on completing the bridge deck, placing the final asphalt surface, building the concrete wall, and installing pavement markings and rumble strips.
The agency said the initial construction schedule was adjusted to accommodate coordination with utility providers and property owners for utility work and right-of-way acquisitions. Additional land needs and more work than expected after the old bridge came down also contributed to delays.
Detours will remain in place to help manage traffic, including school traffic at the start of the upcoming school year. SCDOT said the bridge remains on track to reopen later this summer, barring any weather delays.
Challenges and Delays
The Storm Branch Road bridge project has faced several challenges since its inception. One of the primary issues has been the coordination with utility providers and property owners. This process has taken longer than anticipated, causing delays in the overall timeline. Additionally, the need for additional land and unforeseen work after the old bridge was removed has further complicated the project.
- The original construction schedule had to be revised to account for these factors.
- Coordination with utility companies and property owners has proven to be a time-consuming task.
- Unforeseen work after the removal of the old bridge has added to the complexity of the project.
Community Impact
Residents living near the bridge have experienced significant changes due to the ongoing construction. While some have found that the detour has reduced traffic in certain areas, others are frustrated by the increased travel times.
- Dennis Holloway, a longtime resident, noted that his travel time has increased from 5 minutes to 20-30 minutes.
- Despite the inconvenience, some residents have found benefits, such as reduced traffic in certain areas.
- The community remains hopeful that the bridge will be reopened soon to restore normalcy to their daily routines.
Future Plans and Timeline
As the project moves forward, the focus is on completing the remaining tasks necessary for the bridge to reopen. These include finishing the bridge deck, applying the final asphalt surface, constructing the concrete wall, and installing pavement markings and rumble strips.
- Crews will continue working on these tasks in the coming weeks.
- The goal is to have the bridge ready for use before the start of the next school year.
- Weather conditions could potentially impact the timeline, but officials remain optimistic.
Lessons Learned
The Storm Branch Road bridge project highlights the importance of proper planning and resource allocation. The comparison with the Vaucluse Bridge project underscores the role of federal funding in expediting construction timelines.
- Federal funding can significantly speed up projects, especially those involving interstates.
- Effective communication between local officials and state agencies is crucial for addressing community concerns.
- The experience with the Storm Branch Road bridge serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in large-scale infrastructure projects.
