Birmingham Man Convicted in 2023 Deadly Shooting

A man has been found guilty and sentenced for his role in a deadly shooting that took place in Birmingham’s Kingston community in May 2023. The incident, which left one person dead, has now resulted in a life sentence for the accused.

The shooting occurred on Monday, May 29, 2023, around 8 p.m. at the 800 block of 44th Place North. According to reports from Birmingham Police, officers were called to the scene shortly after the incident. Upon arrival, they discovered 43-year-old Juanderius Woods with a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded and later pronounced Woods dead at the location.

At the time of the incident, police faced challenges in obtaining information from witnesses. However, they believed Woods was the intended target. ShotSpotter alerts indicated that more than 90 rounds were fired during the event, suggesting a possible shootout in the area. Later statements from law enforcement suggested that over 100 bullets were fired.

In early June 2023, authorities arrested Demarco Griffin in connection with the murder. While video footage of the shooting circulated on social media, officials credited surveillance footage as the key evidence that led to Griffin’s identification as the suspect.

Griffin was indicted in January 2024 for his involvement in the shooting. On May 7, 2026, a Jefferson County jury found him guilty of intentional murder in Woods’ death. Following the conviction, a sentencing order was filed on July 6, 2026, which stated that Griffin received a life sentence.

The sentencing document also outlined several financial obligations that Griffin must fulfill, including:

  • $500 to the Circuit Clerk for and on behalf of the Alabama Crime Victims Compensation Commission
  • $500 to the Indigent Defense Fund
  • $1,000 case fine
  • $100 to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences

Griffin was given 42 days to appeal the sentence and conviction.

This case highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to bring justice to victims and their families while addressing the issue of gun violence in the community. The conviction serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of such actions and the importance of accountability.
