Exploring the Future of Travel Between Atlanta and Savannah

Georgians may soon have a new way to travel between two of the state’s most popular cities—Atlanta and Savannah. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is currently seeking public input on a proposed intercity passenger rail project that would connect these two metropolitan areas, offering an alternative to driving.

The initiative has been under discussion for some time, and now GDOT is taking steps to gather feedback from residents. Public comments are being accepted through August 6, 2026, providing an opportunity for Georgians to shape the future of transportation in the state.

The proposed rail service would pass through several key cities, including Atlanta, Athens, Milledgeville, Macon, Statesboro, Augusta, and Savannah. This network aims to provide a more efficient and accessible option for travelers who currently rely heavily on cars for long-distance trips.

Understanding Travel Habits and Preferences

To better understand what the public wants, GDOT conducted a survey in the spring of 2025. The results showed that over half of the respondents traveled between Atlanta and Savannah by car at least several times a year. Additionally, 79% of those surveyed had previously taken intercity passenger rail.

The survey also revealed that residents were divided on whether they preferred the fastest possible service or one with more stops. However, most respondents favored a balance between speed and accessibility, indicating a need for a system that serves both efficiency and convenience.

In addition to the spring survey, GDOT also conducted a summer 2025 travel survey, which received over 15,000 responses. This data provided further insights into how people move across the state, helping to inform the planning process.

Current Status and Next Steps

At this point, the project is still in the planning phase. Ongoing work includes technical analysis, coordination with state and federal partners, and evaluating potential route alternatives. GDOT has stated that more information will be shared as the planning process moves forward.

So far, the project has secured $10 million for its Service Development Plan. This funding includes $8 million in federal support and a $2 million state match. However, GDOT has noted that no additional funding has been identified to move the project beyond the planning stage once this work is complete.

Project Timeline

Here is a breakdown of the key milestones for the Atlanta-Savannah passenger rail project:

  • 2022: The project received $8 million in federal funding and a $2 million state match for planning.
  • 2023: The Federal Railroad Administration awarded the grant, and work began on the project.
  • 2024: The project officially kicked off, with federal coordination and preliminary planning completed.
  • 2025: Market analysis, route identification, stakeholder meetings, and statewide public surveys were conducted.
  • 2026: Technical analysis and alternative review continue; the public comment period remains open through August 6.

How You Can Participate

Residents of Georgia are encouraged to share their thoughts and opinions on the proposed rail service. The public comment period is open until August 6, 2026, and there is an opportunity to take part in the survey online. Your input could play a vital role in shaping the future of transportation in the state.
