The Portland Fire delivered a commanding performance on Saturday afternoon, securing a 102-92 victory over the Atlanta Dream. Center Megan Gustafson was the standout performer for the Fire, contributing 17 points to the effort. She was joined by six teammates who each scored in double figures, showcasing the team’s depth and offensive firepower. Forward Emily Engstler played a crucial role on the boards, grabbing 11 rebounds while also adding 15 points for a double-double. Point guard Carla Leite also achieved a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists. On the opposing side, Alisha Gray led the Dream with 20 points despite the loss.

The Fire had a favorable opportunity as Angel Reese was sidelined due to a leg injury sustained during a previous game against the Seattle Storm. Additionally, Sarah Ashlee Barker was not available for selection for Portland, which could have impacted the team’s strategy.

The game started with both teams trading blows, but the Dream initially held an advantage. Point guard Carla Leite provided early playmaking, recording five assists in the first quarter. However, the Fire struggled to defend the paint, allowing the Dream to build a seven-point lead in the opening period. The Fire responded with strong offensive plays, using penetration and quick passes to close the gap. Their defensive efforts also improved, and they ended the first quarter with a 25-23 lead.

Portland continued to build on their momentum in the second quarter, extending their lead to seven points at halftime with a 51-44 score. The Dream made a late surge in the third quarter, capitalizing on several three-pointers to take a narrow lead. However, the Fire staged a late third-quarter run to regain control, entering the fourth quarter with an 83-75 advantage. They maintained their composure in the final quarter, ensuring the Dream never closed the gap beyond six points.

Here are some key observations from the game:

Good Fundamental Basketball

The Fire displayed solid execution of their offensive strategies throughout the game. It is a testament to Coach Alex Sarama that the team has been able to implement their planned sets consistently. This time, the plays not only looked good on paper but were executed effectively. There were well-executed pick-and-pops and pick-and-rolls, especially in the first three quarters. While the fourth quarter became more chaotic, it was encouraging to see the team’s execution continue to improve as the season progresses.

Points in the Paint

Despite trailing the Dream in points in the paint (52-40), the Fire managed to overcome this deficit on the scoreboard. It is important to note that Atlanta leads the league in this category, so falling behind was expected. However, this remains an area where the Fire can focus on improvement.

Three-Point Shooting

A simple explanation for the Fire’s victory lies in their superior three-point shooting. They scored 42 points on 48.3% shooting from beyond the arc, while the Dream managed only 18 points on 20% shooting. This stark contrast in efficiency was a decisive factor in the outcome.

Gustafson’s Hands

Megan Gustafson continues to impress with her ability to secure the ball. Despite not being the tallest player on the court or having the best vertical leap, she often finds a way to get her hands on the ball first. Her teammates made a few questionable passes, but Gustafson consistently came up with the ball, sometimes in seemingly impossible situations. Her skills serve as a reminder of what other players could learn from.

Serah Williams

Williams had a standout performance for the Fire, scoring a career-high 15 points without missing a single shot from the field. She also went perfect from the free throw line. What makes this achievement even more impressive is that she accomplished this in just over 13 minutes of playing time. If she can maintain this level of performance, it could significantly impact the team’s success moving forward.
