Vietnam’s Con Dao, Indonesia’s Gili Trawangan and Malaysia’s Pulau Mabul have been recognized as some of the world’s most remarkable hidden islands for those seeking off-the-grid adventures and a sense of seclusion. This selection was made by the esteemed travel magazine Travel + Leisure, which has compiled a list of 30 of the planet’s best-kept secrets.

Con Son, the largest island in the Con Dao archipelago located off Vietnam’s southeastern coast, is celebrated for its dramatic granite cliffs, pristine beaches, and crystal-clear waters. The island’s natural beauty and untouched landscapes make it an ideal destination for nature lovers and adventurers alike.

One of the key factors contributing to Con Dao’s appeal is the limited tourism development on the island. This has helped preserve its rich ecosystems and tranquil environment, allowing visitors to experience a genuine escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The island offers a variety of outdoor activities, including exploring scenic coastal roads by motorbike, visiting historical sites such as 19th-century lighthouses, and discovering the untouched natural area of Dam Tre.

In addition to its natural wonders, Con Dao is also known for its fresh seafood, with local dishes prepared using simple techniques that highlight the natural flavors of the ingredients. The dining scene on the island is characterized by a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, where visitors can enjoy meals at local restaurants while experiencing the warm hospitality of the residents.

According to the Tourism Information Center under the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism, Con Dao’s charm lies in its unique combination of turquoise seas, rugged mountains, peaceful surroundings, and rich natural heritage. These elements have contributed to the island’s growing reputation as one of the world’s most distinctive travel destinations.

Gili Trawangan, a small island off the coast of Lombok, offers a laid-back and easygoing vibe. The island is dotted with beachfront cafes, surfing schools, and diving centers, making it a popular spot for water sports enthusiasts. Due to the ban on motorized vehicles, visitors can explore the island on foot, by bicycle, or using horse-drawn carts, adding to the island’s charming and serene atmosphere.

Pulau Mabul, a small island located off the southeastern coast of Malaysia, is a top destination for divers due to its incredible marine biodiversity. The waters surrounding the island are home to a wide range of unique species, including sea moths, bobtail squids, and the rare paintpot cuttlefish. This makes Pulau Mabul a must-visit location for those looking to experience some of the world’s most vibrant underwater ecosystems.

Other notable islands featured on Travel + Leisure’s list include Pico Island in Portugal, Scrub Island in the British Virgin Islands, Skopelos in Greece, Flatey in Iceland, Great Barrier Island in New Zealand, Robinson Crusoe Island in Chile, and Colonsay in Scotland. Each of these islands offers its own unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and adventure opportunities, making them ideal destinations for travelers seeking unforgettable experiences.
