Trump’s Outburst Against New York Times Journalist

Donald Trump has launched a fierce attack on New York Times journalist Maggie Haberman, labeling her a “loser” and asserting that he has passed multiple cognitive tests with flying colors. The former president took to his Truth Social platform to target Haberman’s journalism, dismissing her book as “garbage” and predicting a courtroom victory against the publication.

Haberman’s book, Regime Change, co-written with Jonathan Swan, was released on June 23 and presents an unflattering portrayal of Trump. The biography seems to have angered the former president, prompting his strong reaction.

Trump seized the opportunity to highlight his mental sharpness and physical fitness, emphasizing perfect results from cognitive tests and a recent clean bill of health from Walter Reed Medical Center. His comments reflect a broader pattern of defending his image and challenging critics.

A Personal Attack on Haberman

Trump targeted Haberman with a personal jab, calling her “Maggot” in reference to her decade-long documentation of his professional life and time in office. He claimed that 90% of her book contains “Fake News” designed to undermine his electoral prospects.

“I don’t mind bad press, if they are right,” Trump wrote. “I do mind Fake Reporting, like what’s in her boring book.” He suggested that truthful reporting would be “loaded with lots of SUCCESS.”

The attack included a pointed threat aimed at Haberman’s publication, The New York Times. Trump hinted at an upcoming legal battle, vowing significant financial consequences for the newspaper.

Health Claims and Mental Sharpness

In addition to his criticism of the book, Trump shifted focus to his personal health. He claimed to have undergone a “perfect physical” at Walter Reed, which he stated occurs biannually. He also boasted about his mental acuity, questioning the intelligence of his critics.

“I just finished a perfect physical at Walter Reed, I do it every six months, and I requested another Cognitive Test, the only President to do so, three times, and I aced them all – Got every question right,” he said.

Trump concluded his social media rant by urging his supporters to avoid the journalists’ work, stating, “Anyway, don’t buy their book, it’s garbage!”

Insights from Maggie Haberman

In a conversation with The Guardian, Haberman explained why Trump reacted so strongly to the book’s content regarding his physical health. She noted that Trump’s health “has always been a very specific lockbox for him” because he interprets any admission of sickness or aging as a sign of weakness. This explains why he felt compelled to emphasize his cognitive tests and pristine physicals.

During publicity appearances on shows like MS NOW and Morning Joe, the authors dismissed Trump’s legal threats and hostility. They highlighted that Trump routinely attacks rigorous journalism and emphasized that they conducted over 1,000 interviews—including an on-the-record conversation with Trump himself—to ensure the book’s credibility.

Book Success and Publicity

Despite the controversy, Regime Change has achieved commercial success, appearing prominently on bestseller lists and drawing significant national attention. While its critical disclosures triggered an angry response from Trump, the ensuing controversy has only heightened its profile.
