Omaha Police Share Updates on Crime and Traffic Safety

During a recent meeting of the Omaha Downtown Improvement District, representatives from the Omaha Police Department (OPD) provided an update on crime management in Southeast Omaha. The focus of the discussion included recent trends in criminal activity, traffic enforcement efforts, and the use of new technology to enhance public safety.

Southeast Precinct Captain Paul Hanson shared key statistics from the past six months, revealing that his officers have responded to 904 9-1-1 calls. During this time, they made 36 felony arrests and 35 DUI apprehensions. With increased foot traffic in areas like the Old Market and more visitors due to major events, OPD has prioritized traffic safety as part of its ongoing efforts to keep the downtown area secure.

Enhanced Traffic Enforcement

Officers across the city have been actively cracking down on various traffic violations, including parking infractions, speeding, and loud vehicles. At the meeting, concerned downtown residents expressed worries about drivers who modify their cars to make them louder, often driving around repeatedly and causing disturbances.

Hanson explained that the department has placed a strong emphasis on traffic safety enforcement, particularly regarding speeding and vehicle modifications. “Oftentimes, when you’re driving at excessive speeds, your vehicle even sounds louder, or if you have an altered exhaust, so officers have been putting an emphasis on that,” he said. This includes conducting traffic stops for exhaust and muffler violations.

Drone Technology as a First-Responder Tool

One of the most notable advancements in OPD’s operations is the use of drone technology as part of a first-responder program. Since October 2025, the drone stationed at OPD headquarters has assisted in 1,610 calls. These include incidents such as domestic violence, foot pursuits, vandalism, and searches for missing juveniles.

The drone has proven to be an invaluable tool for law enforcement, providing real-time aerial support that enhances situational awareness and improves response times. Its use has already contributed to several successful outcomes, demonstrating the potential of technology in modern policing.

Community Concerns and Ongoing Efforts

Residents of the downtown area have voiced concerns about the growing number of vehicles with modified exhaust systems. These vehicles not only pose a risk to public safety but also contribute to noise pollution, affecting the quality of life for local businesses and residents.

In response, OPD has committed to maintaining strict enforcement of traffic laws, ensuring that all drivers adhere to regulations designed to protect the community. This includes continued patrols and targeted initiatives to address specific issues raised by the public.

Conclusion

The Omaha Police Department remains dedicated to enhancing public safety through a combination of traditional policing methods and innovative technologies. As the city continues to grow and attract more visitors, the focus on traffic safety and community engagement will remain a top priority. Through collaboration with local organizations and residents, OPD aims to create a safer and more welcoming environment for everyone in the downtown area.
