Lizzo Shares Her Journey with Wellness and Weight Loss

Lizzo, the 38-year-old musician known for her powerful voice and bold personality, has been open about her ongoing wellness and weight loss journey. In a recent interview with The Guardian, she discussed the reasons behind her focus on slimming down. “There are a lot of reasons. People always want to make it one single headline, one single thing. A lot of things can be true at once,” she said. “I was in a place where my physical weight was causing joint pain and aches.”

She continued, “I also got to the point where I came off the internet, and all I had was the studio and my thoughts, so I poured myself into the things I could control. My body, my lifestyle, my routines and habits … and this is who I am today.”

A Steady Approach to Weight Loss

Since 2024, Lizzo has been steadily losing weight, though she has frequently denied that medications like GLP-1s, such as Ozempic or Wegovy, have contributed to her progress. These drugs are often prescribed to individuals with weight-related conditions, but doctors have warned against their use for casual weight loss.

In a recent update, Lizzo shared that she has reached her “weight release” goal. “I am happy,” she said. However, she admitted that her weight has since fluctuated. “I’ve gained 20 pounds since last year, so everyone can ask me about weight gain, too, if they’d like,” she told The Guardian, further detailing her concerns about society’s obsession with physical appearance.

Addressing Systemic Pressure

Lizzo expressed her worries about the effects of such a system, particularly on women and those in the spotlight. “There’s a system of oppression that is constantly putting pressure on, especially women and especially women in the spotlight. That system is unrelenting and it is determined to make you feel s**t about yourself. It won’t stop until you’ve bought every product and you’ve bought into every lie and turned it in on yourself. That system is working at an all-time high right now.”

She emphasized the need to criticize the systems and mediums that perpetuate these pressures rather than the people affected by them. “We should have grace and love and support for them,” she said. “Those people are human beings having a human experience.”

Embracing Body Positivity

Throughout her journey, Lizzo has been a strong advocate for body positivity. She has chronicled her slim-down on social media, sharing her experiences with her fans. “I’ve been methodical, losing weight very slowly,” she previously told The New York Times in an April 2024 interview. “I don’t really see it because if anyone who’s on a natural weight-loss journey knows, losing weight is actually the slowest thing in the world and you don’t really notice it until you notice it. Also, the scale’s not really moving. But anyway, that doesn’t matter. I’m super proud of my current lifestyle.”

Balancing Health and Self-Acceptance

Lizzo’s journey highlights the complexity of weight loss and the importance of maintaining a healthy relationship with one’s body. While she has made significant changes to her lifestyle, she remains focused on self-acceptance and well-being. Her openness about the challenges she faces serves as a reminder that health is not just about numbers on a scale, but about overall wellness and mental strength.

By sharing her story, Lizzo continues to inspire others to prioritize their health while embracing their unique journeys. Her message of self-love and resilience resonates with many, reinforcing the idea that true beauty comes from within.
