Preparing for the 2026-27 School Year in Vigo County
As students enjoy their summer break, school administrators in Vigo County are already working hard to ensure a smooth and safe transition into the 2026-27 school year. The Vigo County School Board recently approved several key initiatives aimed at improving student safety and transportation efficiency.
Upgrading Security Infrastructure
At a recent meeting, the board allocated $2.1 million to install new security cameras across all district buildings. Chief Technology Officer Doug Miller emphasized that these cameras come with a 10-year warranty and offer advanced features that significantly enhance the current system.
“It’s all buildings, district wide,” Miller explained. “There are 687 cameras and over 1,500 views. The video quality is so high that we can do facial recognition. We can track a person’s timeline, which would be invaluable if a student goes missing. We could locate the student on the video and review their movements from entry to exit.”
This upgrade not only improves surveillance capabilities but also provides a more comprehensive way to monitor and respond to incidents within the schools.
Enhancing Student Transportation
In addition to security improvements, the district has also invested in new vehicles to support student transportation. A total of $1.3 million has been set aside for this purpose. Chief Operating Officer Clayton Creason outlined the details of the new fleet.
“We’re adding five new 78-passenger school buses, one new 14-passenger yellow bus, and three 14-passenger white activity buses,” Creason said. “This year, we have more routes and drivers than last year. Last year, there were 126 routes, and now we’re up to 139. We also increased our full-time driver count from 121 to 135.”
These additions reflect the growing needs of the district and aim to provide a more efficient and reliable transportation system for students.
Upcoming School Board Meetings
The Vigo County School Board will hold its next meeting on July 27th. This will be followed by its final meeting before students return to school on August 10th. These meetings will provide an opportunity for community members to stay informed about ongoing developments and future plans for the district.
Conclusion
The investments made by the Vigo County School Board demonstrate a commitment to both student safety and operational efficiency. With enhanced security measures and improved transportation services, the district is taking proactive steps to ensure a positive learning environment for all students. As the 2026-27 school year approaches, these preparations will play a crucial role in supporting the educational journey of students throughout the county.
