A New Chapter for Ja Morant

After a challenging three-year period that saw his career and public image face significant setbacks, Ja Morant is determined to “start fresh” in Portland. During a recent appearance at the Las Vegas Summer League, Morant addressed the media and emphasized that he doesn’t believe he deserves the reputation as a troublemaker that followed him from Memphis. This reputation was fueled by two gun-related suspensions and conflicts with the coaching staff.

“I don’t see why, years later, that’s still the topic when nothing’s happened since,” Morant said. “If I was that guy, y’all wouldn’t be talking to me now. I wouldn’t be here.”

From Star Player to a New Beginning

Morant was once an All-Star in 2022 and 2023, leading a young Grizzlies team that showed promise of becoming a title contender. He was also one of the NBA’s most popular players, known for his incredible athleticism and highlight-reel finishes. However, his trajectory took a sharp turn after receiving an eight-game suspension in March 2023 for displaying a firearm on an Instagram livestream. This was followed by a 25-game ban at the start of the next season.

Over the past three years, Morant played only 79 games total, and the core of the team around him gradually fell apart. By the time he was traded to the Trail Blazers after months of trying to find a taker for his contract, which will pay him over $87 million over the next two seasons, he was the last remaining member of Memphis’ young core.

The Grizzlies received Jerami Grant and Kris Murray in the deal, while Morant gets a chance to redefine himself in a new city.

Embracing Change and Growth

“New home. New team. New organization,” Morant said. “I get to show the fans in Portland a different Ja. It’s like starting all over again. … Over the years, I’ve grown a lot and learned a lot. My mindset changed. I go into things differently now. I feel more mature, and I’m ready to work.”

Morant mentioned that his “body feels great” after injuries limited him to just 20 games last season. He also spoke about joining forces with Blazers stars Damian Lillard, Jrue Holiday, and Deni Avdija, stating they’ll “most likely unlock new parts of my game, and I’ll do the same for them.” He added that he’s open to taking on a reserve role if needed.

Reflections on Memphis

When asked about his time in Memphis, Morant expressed that the city will “always be home for me.” He clarified that he has no resentment toward the organization and remains connected with many of his former teammates.

“[The reaction from Memphis] was all love,” Morant said. “It’s some [fans] that might say bad things about me. I don’t look at it like it’s hate or anything. I just look at it as tough love from a family member. I have family members that do the same thing. I love Memphis, I love the fans, I love my teammates. … It definitely was some good years.”

Looking Ahead

As Morant steps into this new chapter, he carries with him the lessons learned from his past experiences. His journey from being a rising star in Memphis to a player seeking a fresh start in Portland highlights the complexities of life in the NBA. With a renewed focus on growth and maturity, Morant is ready to embrace the challenges ahead and prove that he is more than the image that has followed him.
