BREWTON, Ala. (WKRG) — New details have emerged following a tragic shooting in Brewton that resulted in the death of a teenager.

UPDATE: A missing toddler is believed to be traveling with her mother and a man, according to Mobile police.

According to officials from the Brewton Police Department, 15-year-old Alexa Marky was shot and killed by 18-year-old William Sanders at a home on Evergreen Avenue around 7 p.m. on June 28.

Court documents suggest that Sanders was under the influence of alcohol when he pulled out two pistols from his waistband and began waving them in the air to signal that he was armed. He then allegedly sat down and attempted to unload one of the guns by “sliding the weapon’s slide to eject the chambered round, but did so before removing the weapon’s magazine.”

At this point, according to the documents, Sanders unloaded the magazine, thinking the gun was no longer loaded. He then pointed the gun, believing it was safe, and pulled the trigger, which resulted in Marky being struck in the neck.

Sanders is currently facing charges of reckless murder.

The incident has sparked a conversation about gun safety and the dangers of handling firearms while under the influence of alcohol. Local authorities are urging residents to take precautions and to understand the risks associated with carrying weapons in public spaces.

Background on the Incident

The shooting occurred in a residential area, raising concerns among community members about the presence of firearms in private homes. According to reports, Sanders had previously been known to carry weapons, though there is no indication that he had any prior criminal record related to firearms.

The court documents highlight a critical moment in the events leading up to the shooting. It appears that Sanders was attempting to handle the gun in a manner that he believed was safe, but due to a miscalculation, the firearm discharged unintentionally. This highlights the importance of proper training and awareness when dealing with firearms.

Legal Consequences

William Sanders is now facing serious legal consequences for his actions. The charge of reckless murder carries significant penalties, including potential prison time and fines. The case is expected to go through the judicial system, where prosecutors will present evidence to support their claims.

Local law enforcement is also conducting an investigation into whether there were any other factors that contributed to the incident. This includes reviewing the circumstances surrounding Sanders’ state of intoxication and whether he was aware of the potential dangers of handling the firearm.

Community Response

The tragedy has deeply affected the local community, with many expressing shock and sadness over the loss of a young life. Residents have called for increased awareness and education regarding gun safety, particularly among teenagers and young adults.

Community leaders have also emphasized the need for more resources to address issues such as substance abuse and mental health, which may contribute to risky behaviors.

What You Should Know

  • Always ensure that firearms are handled responsibly and safely.
  • Never assume a gun is unloaded unless you have verified it yourself.
  • Avoid handling firearms while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Seek professional training if you are not familiar with how to operate a firearm.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsibility and caution when dealing with weapons. It also underscores the need for ongoing discussions about public safety and the role of law enforcement in preventing similar tragedies in the future.
