A good night’s sleep on a plane is often a dream for many travelers. Despite numerous attempts to find comfort, the confined space and lack of proper support can make it challenging to rest properly. Social media has become a hub for creative solutions, with people sharing various methods to achieve a more comfortable sleeping position. From using scarves to tie their heads to chairs, to curling up with knees to chest and securing seatbelts around ankles, these makeshift techniques have gained attention.
However, Emirates has introduced an innovative solution that could change the way passengers experience long-haul flights. The airline’s newly refurbished planes now feature adjustable headrests that can be pulled forward to create a cushioned surface for resting. This feature has been widely praised by passengers who have experienced it firsthand.
Instagram user @12cities.co shared a video showcasing her experience with the new headrests, which quickly garnered over 26,000 likes in just 24 hours. In her post, she expressed surprise at the innovation, writing, “Emirates just did what? Best flight of my life ngl.”

In the video, she demonstrates how to pull the headrest down, revealing a sturdy neck pillow-like structure. She then rests her head on it, clearly satisfied with the comfort it provides. The response from the online community was overwhelmingly positive, with many calling it a “game-changer” and praising its benefits for travelers.
One commenter noted that it was great to see someone finally prioritize passenger comfort on long flights. Others described the feature as “genius” and appreciated the upgrade. So far, this improvement has been implemented on 95 Emirates aircraft, including 42 Airbus A380s and 53 Boeing 777s. This covers more than one-third of the airline’s fleet, increasing the likelihood that your next flight might include this feature.
While the economy class seats have seen significant upgrades, premium economy has also received a major enhancement. These seats now offer full leg and foot rests, along with six-way adjustable headrests, providing even greater comfort for those seeking a more luxurious travel experience.

Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airline, highlighted the significance of this retrofit program, stating, “The Emirates retrofit programme revolves around the central premise that we will offer our customers a truly elevated experience every time they choose to travel with us.” He emphasized the collaboration between the engineering team and partners to integrate high-quality products into each aircraft, raising the standard of craftsmanship and complexity.
Despite the positive reception, some passengers raised concerns about hygiene. One user expressed worry about placing their face on the headrest without thoroughly disinfecting it. Another commented, “Bare face on a public surface, no chance,” while others suggested using antibacterial wipes before using the feature.
For those who cannot enjoy the comfort of Emirates’ new headrests, there are alternative methods to improve sleep on a plane. One popular technique involves using the seatbelt to secure the legs in a curled-up position. By raising the knees to the chest and placing the feet together on the seat, passengers can secure the seatbelt around their ankles to keep their legs in place. This position allows them to rest their head on their knees, making it easier to get some quality sleep.

Other recent airline news includes the discovery of a secret cupboard in airplane toilets that anyone can open. Additionally, Spanish airports may face legal issues over a controversial “jacket policy.” There have also been reports of planes being struck by lightning, with insights into what happens during such incidents.
Bella Sapsworth, a former flight attendant for Emirates, previously advised passengers to not feel awkward about reclining their seats to ensure better sleep. She emphasized that passengers pay for a reclining seat and should use it. While this feature can sometimes cause tension with neighbors, it offers the best possible position for sleeping in economy class.
