The Duke Basketball Program’s 2027 Commitment

The Duke basketball program has made a significant move in the 2027 recruiting class by securing its first commitment from a standout player. On Monday night, 4-star forward Kager Knueppel officially committed to the Blue Devils. This decision came as a surprise to some but was always expected given the family connection to the program.

Kager’s commitment somewhat came out of thin air, but it was always anticipated that the 6’10” forward would choose Duke. His older brother, Kon, spent a year at Duke during the 2024-25 season, setting the stage for Kager’s potential arrival.

Kager Knueppel’s Family Ties to Duke

Kon Knueppel played a crucial role in Duke’s success during his lone season with the team. He was the Robin to National Player of the Year Cooper Flagg as the Blue Devils made the 2025 Final Four before an unexpected loss to Houston. In his time at Duke, Kon averaged 14.4 points and 2.7 assists per game on 47.9% shooting from the field and 40.6% from three-point range. He also shot 5.3 threes per game.

Kon’s performance earned him the ACC Tournament MVP after leading Duke to a conference title while Flagg was sidelined due to injury. His contributions were enough to secure him the No. 4 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets. There, he put together a historic rookie year, setting the NBA single-season rookie record for made three-pointers with 273 and leading the league in made threes last season.

The Next Knueppel in Line

Now, the Blue Devils have landed the next Knueppel in line. Kager, a 6’10” versatile forward, has recently climbed the national recruiting rankings. According to the 247Sports 2027 Composite Rankings, he is currently rated as the No. 52 overall player, No. 9 power forward, and No. 4 player out of the state of Wisconsin.

Kager is the second of five Knueppel brothers, and it remains to be seen if the remaining three—Kinston, Kash, and Kid—will follow in their brother’s footsteps to Durham. While Kager is following in his older brother’s path to Duke, he brings a completely different frame and skill set to the table.

Why Kager Knueppel’s Commitment to Duke Is Different Than Kon’s

Kon was an elite catch-and-shooter during his one year at Duke, entering college as one of the best outside shooters in his high school recruiting class. He was also a strong defender, capable of finishing at the rim with finesse and making smart passes.

Kager possesses many of the same skills but with added length that could signal a higher ceiling. He is an established catch-and-shooter and runs the floor well in transition. He excels as a recipient of lob finishes but can also take it to the rim himself and finish around the basket with class.

Physicality and Versatility

Both Kon and Kager play with a lot of physicality, but Kager has a much higher ceiling as a rim protector due to his added size. He is also a versatile defender who can guard multiple positions on the floor, similar to his brother.

Kager is a bit of a late bloomer, which is exciting for Duke fans as he continues to grow into his body. Despite this, he already shows promise as a switchable defender with solid footwork and the ability to block shots at a very high level.

A Promising Addition to the Blue Devils

Kager Knueppel’s commitment to Duke is more than just being the younger brother of a former Blue Devil star. He is a very intriguing recruit to monitor for Jon Scheyer and his coaching staff in the long term. He has become one of the top risers in the 2027 recruiting class over the last several weeks and will bring aspects of his game to Durham that are different from what Kon brought.
