The Colorado Avalanche and the Future of Artturi Lehkonen’s Contract

The Colorado Avalanche are currently navigating a complex landscape when it comes to managing their roster, especially as they look ahead to future contract negotiations. One of the key players in this equation is Artturi Lehkonen, a left wing whose current five-year deal pays him $4.5 million annually against the salary cap. As he approaches the final year of his contract, the Avalanche will need to make decisions about his future with the team.

Lehkonen has proven himself to be one of the league’s top-wing players, consistently contributing both offensively and defensively. His ability to play alongside star center Nathan MacKinnon has only enhanced his value, but it’s important to note that much of his success stems from his own skill set and work ethic. He brings a physical presence to the ice, excelling on the forecheck and maintaining strong defensive responsibilities without the puck. This makes him a natural fit for the Avalanche’s system.

However, there is a significant factor that could influence the negotiation process. Lehkonen has only played a full season once in his career, which was during his time with the Montreal Canadiens. Since joining the Avalanche, he has missed games in each of his first three seasons, playing 16, 64, and 45 games respectively. While he has improved in recent years, missing 12 and 13 games in the past two seasons still raises concerns about his consistency and durability.

This inconsistency becomes even more relevant with the upcoming change in the NHL schedule, which will increase the number of games from 82 to 84. This shift could impact how teams evaluate player performance and contract terms. For the Avalanche, this situation gives them leverage in negotiations with Lehkonen and his agent.

Despite this, it’s clear that Lehkonen deserves a raise. At $4.5 million per year, he is underpaid relative to his contributions and market value. A bump to $5 million could be a reasonable offer, and Lehkonen might be willing to accept it given his familiarity with the team and the environment. The Avalanche may explore a slightly higher number, which would be beneficial for both sides.

That said, Lehkonen’s injury history could play a significant role in determining the final terms of his contract. The Avalanche will likely take this into account as they weigh their options and aim to secure a fair deal that aligns with their long-term goals.

Key Points to Consider

  • Lehkonen’s Performance: Despite his injury history, Lehkonen has shown flashes of elite-level play, particularly in his role as a top-line winger.
  • Team Fit: His physicality and work ethic make him an ideal fit for the Avalanche’s style of play.
  • Contract Leverage: The Avalanche hold some advantage due to Lehkonen’s inconsistent health record, especially with the new 84-game season.
  • Future Negotiations: The team may consider a modest raise, but the final decision will depend on various factors, including his performance and health.

As the Avalanche continue to build their roster, managing contracts like Lehkonen’s will be crucial. Balancing short-term needs with long-term goals will be essential for the team’s continued success.
