VERMONT – A man wanted for his alleged involvement in a criminal organization that has been linked to murders, kidnappings, and human trafficking in India and California was arrested in Vermont on Thursday. The arrest was made by agents from the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, Swanton Sector, early in the morning.

The individual in question is Nitish “Lala” Kaushal, 26, who is reportedly connected to the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria Organized Crime Group, also known as the Bhagwanpuria OCG. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, this group has members across several countries, including India, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. The organization has been implicated in drug and firearms trafficking in Southern California, as well as in cases where individuals were falsely accused of murder in India earlier this year.

Kaushal is specifically accused of carrying out kidnappings and assaults on behalf of the group. A federal arrest warrant was issued for him in the Central District of California last month. His arrest marks a significant development in efforts to dismantle the operations of the Bhagwanpuria OCG.

The FBI’s Albany office shared news of the arrest on social media, expressing gratitude for the collaboration with the Border Patrol. They stated:

“Thanks to the outstanding work our [Swanton Sector Border Patrol] partners are doing to ensure the safety and security of our Northern Border, this dangerous fugitive… was captured early this morning in Vermont.”

This arrest highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to track down and apprehend individuals involved in transnational criminal activities. It also underscores the importance of inter-agency cooperation in addressing complex and far-reaching crime networks.

Key Details About the Case

  • Arrest Location: Vermont
  • Arresting Agency: U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, Swanton Sector
  • Suspect Name: Nitish “Lala” Kaushal, 26
  • Alleged Organization: Jaggu Bhagwanpuria Organized Crime Group (Bhagwanpuria OCG)
  • Countries Involved: India, United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and others
  • Charges: Kidnapping, assault, and involvement in organized crime
  • Warrant Issued: In the Central District of California

Background on the Bhagwanpuria OCG

The Bhagwanpuria OCG is believed to be a highly organized and well-connected criminal network. Its activities span multiple jurisdictions, making it a challenging target for law enforcement. The group has been linked to various illegal activities, including:

  • Drug trafficking
  • Firearms smuggling
  • Kidnappings
  • Assaults
  • False accusations of murder

These activities have had serious consequences, particularly in India, where several individuals were wrongfully implicated in violent crimes.

Significance of the Arrest

The arrest of Kaushal is a major victory for law enforcement agencies working to disrupt the operations of the Bhagwanpuria OCG. It demonstrates the effectiveness of cross-border collaboration and the commitment of agencies like the FBI and U.S. Customs and Border Patrol to ensuring public safety.

This case also serves as a reminder of the global nature of organized crime and the need for continued vigilance and cooperation among international law enforcement bodies.

Future Implications

With Kaushal now in custody, investigators will likely focus on uncovering more information about the Bhagwanpuria OCG’s operations. This could lead to additional arrests and further dismantling of the organization’s structure.

Law enforcement officials will also continue to monitor other potential suspects and sources of intelligence to prevent future crimes and protect communities from the threats posed by such groups.
