PG&E Power Shutoffs Loom This Week as Fire Weather Escalates

Residents in Alameda, Contra Costa, and Marin counties may face power outages lasting up to 20 hours this week due to heightened fire weather conditions, as warned by Pacific Gas & Electric Co. (PG&E) on Tuesday.
The National Weather Service issued a statement indicating that unusually high temperatures, dry conditions, and strong winds will continue from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday. PG&E has identified potential power safety shutoffs for Wednesday and Thursday, aiming to mitigate the risk of wildfires caused by tree debris coming into contact with power lines during high wind events.
According to the latest information, power outages are expected to begin in Marin County between 2 and 3 p.m., followed by Contra Costa County at 3:30 to 4 p.m., and Alameda County starting at 1 p.m. The estimated time for power restoration is set for 10 a.m. on Thursday.
Several areas across these counties are anticipated to be affected. In Marin, the impact will be felt in regions ranging from Mill Valley to the White Hills Preserve. In Contra Costa, the area around the Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve is included in the outage zone. For Alameda, the affected region extends above Interstate 580 east of Livermore.
In addition to these three counties, power shutoffs are also expected in several other parts of California, including Fresno, Monterey, Merced, San Benito, San Joaquin, and San Luis Obispo counties. These measures are part of a broader strategy to prevent potential wildfires that could result from high winds causing tree branches to fall onto power lines.
Public safety power shutoffs are considered a last resort by PG&E, as outlined on their official website. This action is taken to reduce the likelihood of wildfires sparked by electrical infrastructure during extreme weather conditions.
Despite the warning, PG&E has not yet provided a direct response to requests for further details or comments on the situation.
