The 2026 World Cup final is facing the possibility of a delayed start if current weather conditions continue in the New York-New Jersey area when the match is scheduled to begin. Unforeseen weather conditions in the northeastern United States are raising concerns about whether this weekend’s World Cup final between Spain and Argentina will proceed as planned.

The match, set to take place at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 19, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, could be affected by poor air quality due to wildfire smoke originating from Ontario, Canada. FIFA President Gianni Infantino is scheduled to meet with White House officials on Friday to discuss the potential health risks associated with the wildfire smoke, as reported by Sky Sports.

There are several factors that could influence the outcome of the match:

  • Argentina and Spain have Donald Trump to blame for canceling would-be World Cup final test
  • Donald Trump faces awkward FIFA World Cup final moment after skipping tournament

Currently, it is expected that the weather conditions will improve by Sunday, allowing the match to proceed as scheduled. However, prediction markets such as Kalshi and Polymarket are offering users the chance to bet on whether the World Cup final will be delayed. Traders on both platforms seem confident that the match will go ahead as planned.

On Polymarket, there is only a five percent chance that the match will be delayed, while Kalshi traders are assigning a 10 percent probability. Over $25,000 has been traded on these platforms combined.

Weather and health experts have issued warnings about the dangers of being outside in these conditions, including eye and throat irritation and breathing difficulties. Pulmonologist Dr. Vin Gupta has stated that the air quality can “cause an extreme amount of stress on the heart” and “is a very powerful and dangerous one-two punch to the human body.”

In addition to fan health and safety — more than 80,000 spectators are expected to attend the match at MetLife Stadium — player safety has also become a concern. Both Spain and Argentina players could be exposed to the poor air quality while playing outdoors for at least 90 minutes.

Even if the conditions improve — the current forecast for Sunday at 3 p.m. ET is 80 degrees Fahrenheit with clear skies — there is still a possibility of lingering effects for those attending and playing in the match.

One potential benefit for the players could be the extended halftime break, which is expected to last five to 10 minutes longer than usual to accommodate the World Cup final halftime show featuring Shakira, Justin Bieber, and others.
