Unhealthy Air Quality from Canadian Wildfires Affects New York-New Jersey Region

The New York-New Jersey metro region has been experiencing thick smoke and poor air quality over the past few days due to wildfires that are burning out of control in Canada. This smoke, along with soot and other tiny particles, has traveled hundreds of miles across several U.S. states, causing widespread concern about health risks and environmental conditions.

As the region prepares for the FIFA World Cup Final soccer match between Argentina and Spain on Sunday, many are wondering if the smoky conditions will continue. Weather forecasters have provided some insight into what to expect in the coming days.

Smoke Conditions and Weather Forecast

On Friday night, heavy plumes of smoke are expected to linger over the New York-New Jersey area. However, conditions are anticipated to improve slightly during the day on Saturday. That’s when widespread rain showers and thunderstorms are forecasted to hit the region. Some of these storms could bring heavy downpours, dangerous lightning, and damaging wind gusts.

There is also a slight chance of isolated tornadoes in parts of New Jersey on Saturday, according to the Storm Prediction Center. While this may seem alarming, the storms are expected to help keep the wildfire smoke at bay—at least temporarily.

Impact on the World Cup Final

Although some smoke or hazy skies could return on Sunday, it is not expected to be as severe or widespread as it was in recent days. Jay Engle, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service’s New York regional forecast office, said, “Once the rain clears out, the question is does the plume push back into you.”

As of now, low-level smoke near the ground is not likely in northern New Jersey on Sunday. However, there might be some haze in the lower atmosphere. The National Weather Service is calling for the showers and thunderstorms to clear out by Sunday morning, with mostly sunny skies expected in the afternoon. High temperatures in East Rutherford, home of MetLife Stadium (temporarily renamed New York-New Jersey Stadium for the World Cup), are expected to reach the low 80s.

Potential for Remaining Smoke

One small caveat remains: the weather service predicts a light breeze of 11 mph, with winds blowing from the northwest—the same direction that has been steering the Canadian wildfire smoke toward the New Jersey region. If the wind direction and atmospheric conditions remain unchanged, some smoke or hazy skies cannot be entirely ruled out on Sunday.
