Culver’s is a standout among fast food chains, known for its unique offerings and loyal fanbase. The Wisconsin-based restaurant has earned a reputation for its distinctive root beer and the iconic ButterBurgers. To elevate your burger experience, simply say “the works.” But what does that really mean?
At most restaurants, “the works” implies adding all available toppings to your meal. However, at Culver’s, it specifically refers to ketchup, mustard, pickles, and raw onions. This option is available for certain menu items, including the ButterBurger (with or without cheese) and the Mushroom and Swiss Burger. It’s not an option for the Deluxe burgers, which come pre-topped with pickles, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and mayo. If you want ketchup or mustard on a Deluxe burger, you’ll have to ask for them explicitly.
“The works” can also be added to the Beef Pot Roast and Pork Loin sandwiches, but not to any of the chicken or fish sandwiches. In those cases, you’ll need to request specific toppings by name. Even if you order a ButterBurger with “the works,” you can still add additional toppings to your liking.
Building the perfect Culver’s burger

While some customers are content with the simplicity of “the works,” others prefer more customization. For example, some people love pickles, while others find them unappealing. Culver’s caters to these preferences by offering a variety of toppings so that every customer can create a meal that suits their tastes.
Like many burger joints, Culver’s offers bacon, which adds a savory, protein-rich element to any sandwich. Thick-cut strips of pork can be added to any menu item, even the grilled cheese. Traditional toppings like lettuce and tomato help balance the flavors of the burger, providing a fresh contrast to the meat.
In addition to standard toppings, Culver’s also offers less common options such as grilled onions and mushrooms. Some locations may even have jalapeños for those who want a spicy kick. While American cheese is the default, customers can choose cheddar or Swiss instead. “The works” provides a convenient way to get a well-rounded burger without specifying each ingredient, but for a more personalized meal, just a few extra words can make all the difference.
